New Crafting Mechanics and Alchemist Role

New Crafting Mechanics and Alchemist Role
Posted 2023-12-26 17:16:32 (edited)
This idea is inspired by the upcoming alchemist role, reading suggestions for the crafting page and wondered if the two could combine or be updated together to create some new mechanics in WD.

Here are some suggestions for new crafting mechanics that would allow for unique and rewarding items.

Flexible Crafting

I have suggested in this post Change Nesting Material Crafting UI that the nesting material page is updated for better accessibility to items. You can read more about it there and add your suggestions/support too. This was implemented in Development Update 28!

You can choose from any amusement item or herb to create nesting material but it would be cool if this mechanic was used to create other items. This way a player's choice of materials in a recipe is rewarded by creating something different, or allows players to create special items because of their own collection of materials found because of playstyle or biome.

Here is an example recipe:

Shadowcoat Paste
Apply to a Finisher in a hunting party to increase success rate of 10% for 1 hunt
5 x Charcoal
5 x Herbs (Any)

Allowing a player to use Any material, any herb in this case, would mean they could use whatever they have available. The recipe doesn't have to be created the same way each time and rewards variety. This would also potentially increase the value of materials if there were more ways for them to be used.

Shadowcoat Paste [Floral]
Apply to a Finisher in a hunting party to increase success rate of 10% for 1 hunt, 20% during Spring
5 x Charcoal
5 x Herbs (Any) > Player uses 5 x Floral Herbs / Coigreach Herbs

New recipes could be found through creative item choice or hinted through explore encounters. It creates a new way of crafting without having to obtain a recipe scroll and a new 'base' recipe could be dropped with secret variants to be found.

Shadowcoat Paste [Lunar]
Apply to a Finisher in a hunting party to increase success rate of 10% for 1 hunt OR
Apply to lead wolf for increased success in interacting with lunar packs / reveals hidden lunar encounters
5 x Charcoal
5 x Herbs (Any)
[Freestyle Recipe] + Glowing Spore

Another variant that could be created with a freestyle recipe option. This would allow extra materials to be added to a base recipe. These mechanics would work so well for cooking / meal prep style of crafting, thinking about BoTW, where items in a recipe increase buffs.

This would help use other materials which are the same apart from colour, eg. Wolf Pelt (Any), allowing you to use brown, red or white pelts.

Workshop NPCs and New Processes

To support flexible crafting, it made sense to think about other ways of finding materials, such as buying, trading or creating them with new processes. These processes could be done by NPCs, it makes sense for other animals to help with different dexterity and skills. It could also create a new place to visit on WD with a marketplace/workshop feel where things change.

NPC suggestions:
-Help create an item, increase items buffs
-Transform materials, such as turn rabbit carcass into lucky foot
-Sell or trade items, find/scout a specific material, give quests
-Work 'machines' needed to craft items, furnace run by charcoal, charged core etc.
-Open new mini-areas to explore such as gem caves/mines, junkyards
-Change above during events, seasons, biomes, time of day, rollover

(updated 24/03/24)
Thanks for listening to me yapping, please let me know your suggestions for crafting on WD. I don't want to see crafting increase in difficulty, maybe some more fun and variety. The crafting system could be as creative as the wolf side of the game and creating a flexible crafting system means all the recipes and nesting mats could be created in one menu.
