Part 1 and no is it not set up like this for the book. And I'm being summoned. So I'll have to post Part 2 and or 3 depending on how long it span, probably tomorrow. I love my family...but they do be bothersome right now.
Chapter 1 - Chosen King
Everyone sat at the long table, chatter filling the dining hall. Today was the celebration of Sam and Marie's seventeenth birthday. It was also the day that their King would announce who would be succeeding him. Sam sat down next to his twin, "Marie you are biting your lip again."
She glanced at him, "I am?"
He nodded, "You really need to relax, father said you'd be his choice. He even pulled us off to the side to inform us first."
Marie nodded, glancing toward their father who smiled and nodded towards her. Their mother stood next to him holding their baby sister. She still held a frown on her face, it hadn't changed ever since their father had told them in private that Marie would be the next King.
"I don't know…What if mother convinced him to change his mind. Or what if the others protest so much that he…"
Sam grabbed her shoulders, "Look at me…" She stared into his green eyes, the only true difference between them appearance-wise. "Father will not change his mind, not even if he had the pressure of the True Kings weighing down on him."
Marie nodded, taking in a deep breath before smiling, "Thank you, Sam." He smirked, "Of course, I'm the oldest, it's my duty to help you out and fulfill your dreams."
"Oh come on, you are only older by a few seconds!" He booped her nose, "Still older though. I'll always be your older brother." She rolled her eyes, shaking her head, "Don't try using that as a way to get out of working for me!" The two of them giggled slightly before turning their eyes to their father as he tapped his glass. Everyone in the room fell silent at once.
"Good morning to you all, I know it has been a while since we all gathered together. Today is a very special day. It marks the day the curse was lifted from our family. It was the day my wonderful Queen and I were blessed with two amazing children, Sam and Marie!"
Glasses raised in the air with cheers, before everyone took a drink falling silent once more. Kalvin stood tall raising his glass towards his son and daughter who now stood.
"It's on this already special day that I will announce an even more special occurrence. Some of you may not like what I have to say, but I will listen to my children. I will not force them into a life they don't wish for." The silence broke as a few began to whisper, with these words some of them already knew what was about to be announced.
"On this fine day, I, Kalvin Summers, bestow the title of next King to my daughter, Marie Summers!"
The room fell into an uneasy silence, broken only by the hesitant cheers of her brother, Miles, and their loyal friend and mentor, Cage. Marie, however, had anticipated resistance, but she hadn't expected the near absence of celebration. Somehow it still managed to hurt her heart to know of their disapproval.
Kalvin frowned, "What is wrong with you all?" There was clear anger in their King's voice, making them flinch.
Ava, the lead council woman spoke up, "K-king Kalvin, I do not agree with this, she is not the true firstborn…She is also a female and…"
"Your point being?" Kalvin retorted.
"Well, she may be unable to make the hard decisions sometimes required of a King… It's as if you are announcing that her future mate will be the next King. No questions asked." A low growl arose from Miles making Ava glance toward him, "No offense Miles, but you could see how this might be hard for us to accept. You've only been a part of this Pride for eight years, as someone not originally part of our ranks we would feel uncertain about this."
Marie's final bit of patience snapped, "And you?"
Sam grabbed Marie's wrist shaking his head, but she pulled away heading for the one speaking.
"Pardon me?" Ava said confused as to what Marie was on about.
"Are you originally a part of our Pride?"
"Well yes…I've been a part of this pride for almost my entire life…" Marie stopped before the older woman, staring her down. The woman tried using her aura to scare Marie but Marie's was still stronger. "Almost, oh so then you aren't originally from this pride are you? Does that mean I should have my father strip you of your title as a part of our council? Since you yourself are a woman and not originally part of my pride. I'm sure you have failed at making some important decisions."
A heavy silence fell across everyone as Marie stood in front of Ava, her fangs bared. Ready to take down the challenge before her. There was a clapping sound and Ava took in a shaky breath, as Marie turned toward her father. "Sorry father, but I will not sit back while someone tries to make a fool out of you, Miles, or myself. Miles is my mate! You are my cherished father. And I…might not be the true firstborn, but still as the first female born of your family in years, I deserve respect from others."
Kalvin nodded, "No, you had every right to put her in her place. Ava and everyone else…I expect you to mind your manners and remember your ranks. As you have seen, Marie is very capable of handling herself. She is only seventeen so she has much more to learn, but she has been training harder than anyone else. As for Miles, you all know very well he became a part of our pride as soon as we found him and took him in. It's even more amazing that my wonderful daughter happened to be his mate. Miles is just as hard-working, none of you have ever doubted him before now. So I ask that you do not do so again."
Everyone in the hall nodded, before apologizing and going back to talking amongst themselves while eating. Marie walked back to her seat. "That was risky…" Sam whispered into her ear and she shrugged.
"I will not allow them to belittle us, I will remind them of their positions."
"Wow…my little sister is so cool." Sam said ruffling her hair.
"Hey!!!" Marie grumbled smacking his hand away, he smirked before glancing towards Miles who was sitting next to them in silence.
"Miles, don't let them get under your skin."
Miles glanced at Marie and Sam, the two of them smiling at him as they still picked on each other. He began to chuckle, "Thanks you two!" Marie and Sam chuckled, before settling down to eat and talk about their plans of training for the day.
"Ugh can I skip…I'm so tired of this…"
"Don't you even dare try to escape. I will track your butt down." Cage said as he leaned against Marie's chair.
Sam flinched, "I…would never dare!!!"
"Mhm…I'll remember that the next time you pretend to be sick." Cage shook his head and Marie smiled. "Thank you, Cage."
Cage was one of their best enforcers, even though he was only twenty-two. He'd been entrusted to train their group and that consisted of Kadin, Miles, Marie, Jaylen, and Sam. A solid five teamed group meant to take on any possible tasks if needed. Though those kinds of things wouldn't be happening anytime soon. Training in teams started at the age of eight, it was to test if we were able to work together even at such a young age. That and bonding as a team was very important, it had to be when depending on them to have your back. To make sure that you weren't going to get killed by an enemy in a fight.
Marie was rather happy with her team, even though Kadin was older than them by a couple of years. He was 'too' young to join the other teams so he'd be stuck with them. Or at least that was what they had been told. However, Kadin had been told to keep Marie safe at all costs which was why he was assigned to their group.
Not that Marie knew anything about that, her father had told Kadin to keep it a secret because it could cause issues. Though Kadin had always felt rather close to Marie, protecting her came naturally and easily. Well that was until she started going against others orders….or trying to sneak around.
It didn't take them long to finish up their food and then it was off to training. Cage had decided that they would be tracking each other in pairs. Sam and Miles were paired up, while Jaylen and Marie got stuck together despite Jaylen's adamant protesting.
The two of them now sat in a tree semi-covered in mud and Jaylen grumbled, "Shut up unless you want to be found." Marie hissed. He glared at her, "They are going to find us anyway! You and your twin's damn link will give us away! That's why I didn't want to be teamed up with you."
"Oh come on Jaylen, we were told not to use our connection. Also, I thought you didn't believe in it." Jaylen frowned, "He'll probably use it anyways. You know how lazy Sam is."
"He won't have to use it if you don't shut up!"
"Screw you." He growled before jumping out of the tree, landing roughly on the ground. He went to crouch low into the bushes to keep out of sight but he didn't get the chance to hide again as a black jaguar broke through the bushes tackling him to the ground. Jaylen growled as he tried to kick Sam off him, however trying to kick a black jaguar off oneself while in human form wasn't easy. "You found us way too fast!!!"
"Not really when you were yelling and making so much noise if I had missed you I'd be majorly concerned about myself." Sam said with a toothy grin as Miles came to a stop staring up at Marie. "Are you going to come down or do I need to fetch you?" Marie smirked, "Are you promising to whisk me off my feet?"
He returned her smirk, "Well I can't say we'd land well, but I could certainly try?"
"Get a room you two!" Kadin grumbled as he and Cage arrived. Cage didn't pay mind to Miles and Marie though as his attention zeroed in on Sam. "You were told not to use your connection."
Sam simply smiled, but it only angered Jaylen further, "Come on, you can't do that!!!" Sam chuckled as he tackled Jaylen to the ground once again. "Why not? I'm simply using the tools I have."
Marie dropped down from the tree, "I told you using our connection was forbidden as well! How can you expect to increase your tracking skills by cheating?" Sam shrugged, stepping off of Jaylen. Marie frowned, moving to help him up but he smacked her hand away, "I don't think it's fair you guys are like beacons to each other!"
Marie rolled her eyes, "Hey, I was the one listening to the rules. Don't rope me in with him." Jaylen sighed before finally taking her hand and standing, "Still though, it's odd you guys can…"
"Feel each other." Marie and Sam said at the same time, glancing at each other with a small smirk.
"Ew…don't sync up now! That just makes it weirder." Marie rolled her eyes, "Fine. How about this, we do one on one training. You run and hide and I'll track you down."
