What to look for in a stud?

What to look for in a stud?

Hi! It's been a while since I joined but unfortunately I had to take an extended hiatus early on. Since it's been so long I'd really like to set a stud and get back into the swing of things. I just don't know what to go for while trying to find one. I personally like the pie and patches mutation studs(I would choose a G2 wolf for this) but I've also seen a big market for chased nbw studs as well. Just wondering if anyone could give me some guidance on if one is better than the other or what to look for in a stud otherwise

Depends on what a person is looking for. Me personally, I'm breeding "legacy" wolves that are high stat and natural in appearance, so any stud that is under G5, has low/no unnatural color markings & eyes, and has high stats is something I go for.

However, I am somewhat in the minority on that. NBW studs, pie/patches mutations, and event markings are very popular. High stats are always a sell and you may have trouble getting requests for a stud that has average/low stats.

Whatever you go for though, keep in mind that if you're going to be dropping a lot of cones on a stud, you are probably not going to make it back. The average stud is a pocket money generator, not a massive profiteer. If you want to make profit on your stud, set a low budget (maybe 10 GC max) for purchase & customization, train/level your stud up to raise its stats, and advertise the heck out of it.

"Template" for a Profitable stud:
- T3 or * base
- do not have all its markings be T0 or T1, if possible
- have minimum of 7 marks, preferably 10
-  have at least 400 total stats by breeding age, ideally 500-600 (unless you use a NBW)
- applicator or breed only eyes if possible
- carrier or active secondary mutation is a huge bonus

Also look into potential niches where you can corner the market. For example, I noticed while searching for a stud for my stalker that there are very few low gen studs with high wisdom and smarts. A search for studs with 0% COI, max gen 4, and minimum 300 smarts & wisdom has less than one page worth of studs. Of that group, only 7 of them have a stud fee of 400 SC or lower. It is not that hard to breed & train a wolf to 300 wis & smarts, but apparently not that many people think to stud them. (Which is weird since high stat stalkers are necessary for finding large prey scent trails in difficult biomes, so you'd think people would want to stud them)
