Remnants are used for nesting materials and crafting. So basically everything on the Crafting page in the Hoard will have use of them.

Thanks. So far the only crafting recipes I've found seem to be background items, are all crafting recipes for background items, or can you make other things as well?

There are also some applicators that can be crafted with remnants, like the Sentinel Pose. But even backgrounds and decors are not as useless as they seem. During the February Matchmaking event, they can be used as date gifts to earn event currency. And having crafting ingredients handy is helpful when the snake or mouse gives you a crafting quest.
