Reduced Reliance on RNG (from the perspective of a game maker)

Posted 2020-12-03 12:29:15

I try not to complain to much, but on days like this it's hard. My lvl 12 wolf had her butt kicked by moose lvl10, bighorn sheep/ram/whatever lvl 11 and bear lvl 13 (ok, that may have been a stupid idea) which gave me manges to make things better. I had full hp at the start of each battle, after one or two hits I started bleeding. No lucky feet used.
Yesterday I used lucky feet and started bleeding the very next turn (I lost that battle), so it's not a miracle cure for RNG system.

RNG really should be rebalanced, because for now I feel punished for even trying to battle, maybe that was the point, to make things more "realistic", but it does not spark joy so far :/

To add insult to the injury, my hunter team with 76 synergy and 3 pack members of 100prof in their roles (stalker, chaser, and finisher are 100%, two chasers have lower prof – 60% and 25%) had just came empty handed from critter trail OTL

So earlier today I was given a quest to kill some small canids. Almost immediately I find a level 2 coyote. Being that I am level 16, I didn't think of healing to fight it, and went into the battle with 25 HP. First, the coyote attacked first. Then it made me bleed on the second hit. I had to run from an enemy 14 levels below me. I think it's just ridiculous that I have to be full HP even for that kind of battle or I will risk dyingΒ

Adding support!

It's quite frustrating having a herbalist at 100% proficiency being practically the exact same as the herbalist in the beginning (minus free inspections).

I've also been stuck at level 17 for the past week because it's so difficult to find enemies that give decent xp, and even harder to actually defeat them even with lucky feet!

The RNG 100% needs sorting out or having something to balance it out a bit, I love the game but it's discouraging to be stuck at blocks that can easily be prevented.

adding onto whatΒ @KiraΒ said, the encounter difficulties need to be corrected! i understand if in an easy biome, my lvl 14 wolf encounters a bunch of lvl 5-10 enemies, but if im exploring in the swamp or rainforest, the MAJORITY of the encounters i get should be lvl 10+! does that not make sense haha? im so confused as to why leveling up does literally so little when it comes to explore encountersβ€” you should be able to win things easier with higher stats, and if you're in a difficult biome at a high level, you should be encountering higher level enemies that give higher XP

Really starting to feel the burnout from this since it's winter. 5 hunt quest given to me yesterday. I only just finished it today because that final hunt took forever to get.

My good hunting team is at around 75% synergy and 4/5 of the wolves are at 100% proficiency. The 1 that is not up to snuff is a 400 stat ex-scout with around 20% or so proficiency. None of the hunts I sent them on brought back fruit today. All 10 hunts were failures.Β Not even critter trails were successful (the few I had the option to choose anyway)

It was the 1st hunt of the day on my second team, that was less than 30% synergy and much lower proficiency across the board, that brought home the successful hunt to let me finish the quest in the end.Β

I know winter is meant to be hard, but what the honest hell LOL.

It makes a lot of the time and patience put into that first hunting team (members of which I've had since September when I joined) feel like a waste. I want a game that will challenge me, not turn the time and patience I put with it into a slap to the face like this.

On the opposite end I am suddenly landing so many latches since reaching level 15? When before there was no point in trying it at all. It all feels so random and inconsistent.

Support - right now it feels excessively random. The levels feel completely arbitrary - a level nine shouldn't get his tail handed to him on a platter by a level one. There's just no incentive to battle past a certain point, either - if I win, I get, what, 2% exp, a pinecone, and not even a carcass to show for it.

I've quit other games over less obnoxious RNG before.

As someone whose level 14 lead has gotten her ass kicked by a level 6 eagle, I agree, the RNG is TRULY random, and the rewards for engagement are overall very poor.

TBH, foes under and OVER a certain level shouldn't even be present for the player to fight, and a slew of underleveled enemies capable of landing 15 "lucky shots" in a row is just obnoxious. If I had to do this kind of grind in a traditional RPG, I'd have put it down by now.

Same goes for what's been mentioned on hunting. It's one thing to say 'the hunting party was unable to find any prey' during certain seasons, but having a high-synergy hunting pack with maxed proficiency fail consistently is really annoying. There is no real sense of growth.

I get the sense that there's some 'balance' measures being taken with this so no one games the system re: overhunting/etc with multiple parties, but if you're not sending multiple hunt parties out throughout the day, I could see getting into real trouble food-wise. Esp. if you're not able to buy carcasses off of the trading post.

EDIT: I also get that the 'in trouble food-wise' part of things can be seen as "realism" or "flavor," but when one of the best and most consistent ways to earn SC is quests, and the quest is 'complete six hunts' (which happened to me yesterday), it compounds the annoyance quite a bit. If you're going for cruelty-of-nature style ludonarratives, maybe remove Hunts from the dailies, especially ones that can't even be completed by your A-teams. Like it or not, challenges need rewards, and arbitrary failures don't feel very rewarding.

Also, I understand devs want to prevent hoarding SC and keep inflation low, but there's daily limit to how many SC we can get from Raccoon Wares and it's not like you can gain a lot of SC from selling food on trademarket. So better hunting chances won't do us as much harm I think.

Yes please! The RNG in battling is insufferable. I seem to regularly lose fights against enemies I'm 10 levels above. Even when I use a lucky foot, I still can end up losing. It ends up with me burning through an unnecessary amount of salves daily. Leveling is a chore rather than fun or interesting. RNG has been bad in other aspects of the game but battling by far has given me the worst trouble.

So I thought the main RNG issue was with battling, which is almost comedic in how random it is. Illnesses had never really bothered me, aside from the odd open wounds through hunting.

That was, until yesterday and today. In that time I’ve somehow developed 8 different illnesses across different wolves, including both of my scouts which has never happened before. It isn’t much of an issue as my herbalist is 100% and I have a good stock of medicine but it is INCREDIBLY annoying and completely unrealistic.Β

Needless to say I support the RNG being fixed, because it’s certainly broken at the moment.Β

Edit: 10 illnesses now. Ridiculous.Β
