100 questions players ask | a wolvden guide

45/100 completed so far.

. . .

over the years i've gotten a few requests to make a guide for new & intermediate players. special thanks to uva and ninsun for all the encouragement!

[  please read everything here first  ]

this thread will not contain answers to tutorial questions that can be found in the 'help' tab. a handful of common blanket questions already have extensive and well-known guides, so i will leave a directory below for quick reference. if you are looking for information on the site rules, please instead go over the terms of service and code of conduct

some questions will require statistics/simple answers and others will require opinions & tips based on my personal experience. if you disagree with any advice-based questions i answer, that is understandable, but please be kind!

replies of all types are welcome, including follow-up questions/suggestions. the only thing i ask is that readers please do not answer a user's question for me (even if i am inactive). i encouraged & greatly appreciated the help in my previous threads, but i'd like this specific guide and answers to stay personal to me. if the user's question is applicable to the guide, they will be notified that it was answered in-post.

general directory

how to befriend wolves
the reason your wolves don't get along
where to find herbs
a list of lead wolf personality buffs

table of contents

to help you find what you're looking for, i have separated all the FAQs into categories. select what best applies to your question below, then search for keywords using 'command f' on mac or 'ctrl f' on windows.

mostly for my own reference, topics that i did a notable amount of my own research for will have a 𖤓 symbol next to the question. this doesn't mean that i was the first player to discover said answer and didn't use information from other players in my conclusion, just that i was interested in it and used some of my own personal data/theories.

[  game operations  ]

what is wolvden time?

wolvden time is on a 24-hour system (or 'military time') that is consistent for everyone— meaning when it is 22:38 in-game for you, it is 22:38 in-game for everyone else. you can check how far behind or ahead you are from wolvden time by converting your current, real-life time to the 24-hour system and then subtracting the difference from wolvden's current time.

wolvden's clock time has no effect on the 'time of day' (dawn, day, dusk & night) which are also consistent for everyone, but change often.

how do the seasons & weather work?

the four seasons change every six rollovers and even impact the length of 'time of day' events— ie in winter, nighttime will last ninety minutes longer than it does in the summer.

winter is the most difficult season for gameplay. puppies born in winter will suffer from decreased survival chances and may require more proficient pupsitters. even very experienced hunting parties may struggle to find food.

besides a few different explore encounters and artwork changes, the weather state impacts very little and is different (site-wide) for each biome at the time.

is there a fast way to feed/play with my wolves?

unfortunately, 'feed all play all' is a feature in the grove, but is still bizarrely expensive for the average player.

instead of feeding or playing with your wolves via their pages, try feeding them via the hoard using large carcasses or stacks of amusement items.

tip: if you experience discomfort with the constant scrolling & clicking in this game for any reason, try zooming out 70-80% in your browser! it takes some getting used to, but your mouse needs to move a lot less

[  wolves and puppies  ]

is there a fast way to get my puppy's survival chance up?

in an emergency, you can always claim a nbw from explore and set them as a pupsitter. when a new sitter is solely watching one puppy, they start off with a total protection percentage of 60%; this is usually enough to guarantee safety.

what are the best lead wolf talents? 𖤓

body language: discover a wolf's disposition (personality type) immediately when befriending.
wolfy odour: 5% higher chance to attract special & chased nbws in explore.
virile: 10% boost to pregnancy chance regardless of the female's fertility (this applies to stud breedings).
tireless: victorious battles return 25% of used energy.

how do i make a traveling wolf?

first, make sure you have travelers enabled through your account settings on the profile page. if that's good to go, select your wolf and go to their settings; at the bottom, there should be a section for traveling wolves with bullet points to explain how the system works!

is it worth it to gene check nbws?

the data is scarce, but according to a few player-made resources, the assumed chance of finding a chased mutation carrier is less than 1 percent— meaning you will have to test 200-500 nbws to successfully find one. depending on how lucky you are, that cost would fall between 60 and 150 gc total in scrying prices. this could be a major loss if the wolf carries an undesirable mutation or is older than, say, two and a half years.

for this reason, i only test chased nbws, but this is entirely up to you

what is the absolute fastest way to level up a wolf?

rescouting difficult biomes (glacier & rainforest) can garner over a thousand exp. after your wolf reaches level 20, finding random stat drops will become scarce— you can then switch them to another role if you desire.

how do i estimate a wolf's max stats from level one? 𖤓

pack wolves gain 418 stats from leveling alone. hunters will gain an average of 2-3 extra stats per rollover if their hunts are maxed out by the end of the day. other roles will drop less random stats, with an average of 1-2 extra stats per rollover (using my personal data).

what are good stats for an nbw?

between 265 & 295 stats (anything higher would be an anomaly).

[  breeding  ]

do inbred wolves experience disadvantages?

none at all, but inbred wolves are less valuable in trading due to common player preferences. on the bright side, if you are a player who doesn't notice or care about inbreeding, the wolves you purchase will be inexpensive.

does a wolf's generation matter? 𖤓

there is no short answer to this as it is a highly debated topic, so i will give a purely factual reply with a bit of site history!

contrary to a popular myth that low-gen projects started solely to track lineages, the movement actually originated on lioden (wolvden's sister site) as a sort of challenge for breeding enthusiasts to add difficulty to their game. this was inspired by a popular trend of breeding lions unrelated to the 'big four,' but was more difficult and pertained to a smaller group.

as we know, things that are hard to obtain are often valuable. low-gen breeders required (and still require) a lot of effort and resources in the beginning of their projects, making the market more expensive. it is easier to pass down desirable traits as generations proceed, especially stats, combo features, mutations etc. finding a perfect nbw or g2 for your project isn't easy and this issue extends beyond the player-made market.

on the opposite side, a g13 wolf could very well be perfectly curated through many generations at fairly low costs and for little input— although, in modern times, this is a shared outcome of the feedback loop.

even with the horrendous stat pass rates and the oversaturation of chased nbws, a lot of players participate in low-gen breeding. don't fret; there is a place in the market for whatever your preference is, and it is entirely up to you to decide what you find fun in relation to making gc/sc. i encourage you to be mindful & not argue against the playstyles of others for any reason.

how can i find specific breeding males?

the 'studs' section of the forums has (literally) thousands of posts & sales chat often has a good amount of stud advertisements being sent at any given time— however, it is difficult to narrow down anything this way, and there's a good chance you will miss other opportunities.

using the 'search wolves' function in crossroads is the easiest way to find particular studs. under the 'options' selector, make sure to check 'for stud' so the search will automatically exclude pack wolves.

then, you can choose whichever features you'd like to find if no results are yielded, consider broadening the search.

how do i sell reverse studs / a female wolf's heat?

create a forum post & advertise yourself! keep in mind that, despite a female wolf being able to produce less puppies in a lifetime, their breeding prices tend to be lower or around the same as a 'regular' stud.

once reserved, the buyer would send over any breeding items they'd like to be used, then specify a breeding male (this could be their own or another player's). the buyer always covers the stud fee & the price of your female wolf's heat. depending on your rules, they could also cover the nesting material & food/amusement for the puppies before they are weaned!

i came from lioden. is mass breeding worth it?

in the current state of the economy, it is less viable than lioden, but can 100% be worth it depending on your goals. the pass rate for many mutations are estimated to be lower over here while we lack cheap breeding incentives (cotton root bark, active heats upon claiming). to add to this, stat genetics are relatively wacky and keeping pups alive is a little more expensive and demanding.

[  events  ]

how do i transfer event currency to another player?

there is no precise system to transfer event currency to another player. the safest method to do this, if you are so inclined, is to buy the player whatever item they'd like and then sell/gift it to them.

which biome gives the most lunar essence? 𖤓

most players agree the rainforest, tundra & desert have the most 'empty' explore interactions by a small amount (i've estimated something like 15% according to my own data). this can wield more opportunities to find lunar essence, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to ignore these on non-event days if you're in need of energy.

when should i fight enemies during the lunar event?

100% would recommend using most of your energy in the daytime collecting lunar essence, salves, herbs, and whatever else you need, but don't pass a good opportunity to fight a high level enemy, especially if you have collected all of your essence for the day. lucky feet (if you have them) will solve any issues if you run out of regular energy while fighting animals in the lunar realm. this event is known to garner a lot of exp for your lead, so use that wisely!
