The world was dark, then bright and loud. Sounds slamming against the sensitive ears on this poor child. Eyes opened, voices whispered, yelled, scratched. Blink. Breath. Look around. Cry. Blink again. Sensations slamming into the head, the body, the ears. Never ending until blackness consumed it once again. 10 years old Little Bird Morgan- Yes, an ironic name for a bird child. Was being taught how to fly. Well. In better terms, jumping off of a tree and being yelled at to open her wings. 'Which is hard when they're throwing me off the fucking tree' She thought angrily s she got pushed yet again. She struggled to open her wings, which were long and deep brown, with lighter secondary feathers. She took a moment, then launched herself off with them, soon feeling the wonderful wind through her brown hair and wings. She let out a loud whoop, climbing high, high, high and still needing more. She stopped climbing and just looked at the ground. Which was so small now. Little people and houses, it made her feel so powerful. She let herself fall down, letting the adrenaline course through her mind and body until she opened her wings again, flying so close to the ground she could feel the grass on her arms. Then, without warning, she crashed into a wall that was absolutely not there before, and everything faded to black. Bird held her arm with a grimace. Sitting in her room while her 'mother' was wrapping bandages tightly around her arm. Not even trying to be gentle. Making them tight on purpose. "Mom.. It hurts-.." She said, yelping when it was tightened again in response to her words. "I don't care. Shut it. You're lucky I'm doing this for you, brat." Her mother said. Her mother was a tall lady, with pitch black wings, hair, and seemingly eyes. Her looks were cold and her personality was even worse. "Be still." She said, tightening the bandages and slapping Bird's hurt arm. "Ow- Mom please-" Bird whimpered out, trying to get away. Bird's mother, Ange. Pulled her back. "Stop it." Ange snapped, finishing she bandages then putting the bandages back. "No more flying for the rest of the month. We don't need more accidents." "Fine." Bird said with a glare at Ange. She had never liked Ange, or, her mother. She was always mean, and yelled at her. Ange looked at Bird, then left, locking the door behind her. Bird let out a sigh, pulling her knees to her chest and looking out the small window her room had. Her room was quite small, with a simple bed with a mere sheet as a blanket, a dresser holding what few outfits she has, and a desk with a lamp where she did her work. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't the best either. Suddenly a rock got thrown at the window. And instead of being scared, Bird's face lit up with excitement as she opened the window. Ducking out of the window and flying into the arms of her friend. "Ava!! It's been so long!!" Bird said, hugging her friend who wrapped their arms around Bird. "It has! Now, lower your voice, we don't need Ange hearing us." Ava said, taking her friends hand and pulling her towards the shed of the house, where they usually hid and talked. "Ava- Where have you been?" Bird asked once they were inside the shed, crossing her arms. Ava let out a chuckle at how Bird looked doing the motions like that. "I haven't been able to sneak out. It's getting harder as we get older. We need to escape soon." Ava said, worry on her face where there used to be laughter. Bird frowned, hugging her self. "But this is our home.. We can't just leave.. Where would we even go? How would we get food?" Bird asked, looking to the house through the cracks in the wood of the shed. "I don't know, we need to figure that out. But we have to hurry. We don't have much time-" Ava said, looking at the direction Bird was looking at. Ava noticed the bandages. "B, what happened to your arm?" Ava asked, taking Bird's arm gently and trailing her slender dark fingers down Bird's arm. Bird moved her arm, hiding it behind her back. "They were teaching me to fly and I accidentally crashed.." Bird said, looking to the side and down, her head feathers lowering to show her shame. Ava sighed. "It's worse than I thought.. If they're having you fly at such a young age- they're preparing for something." Av said, stress showing in the way a few feathers fell from her white wings. Bird hugged Ava. "It'll be ok A.. We.. We just have to go.. We have to go now." bird said, looking at Ava. Ava nodded in agreement. "Ok.. We will. Now." Bird and Ava burst through the door, spreading their wings as they flew high and out of sight, flying ahead with no idea where they were going, no idea of where they would end up. But they kept going until Bird got to tired to fly anymore. Ava carried Bird to a cave, and they huddled in the corner to rest. "Ava.. I'm scared..' Bird whispered, half asleep. "I know B, I know. It'll be ok, we'll figure it out. I promise.." Ava whispered, and the two fell asleep into the deep blackness of the dream realm.. 12 years old.. Two years had passed since Ava and Bird had run away. Two years of struggle, hunger, running. Darkness. Breathing. Everything was bright, then dark. Running, chasing, ducking, screaming. Trees ripping feathers and skin and hair. Tripping. More screaming. Fire lighting the dark, burning smell of feathers hair and skin. Pain, like nothing felt before. It was chaos. It hurt. It was Ava opened her eyes, breathing fast and hands grabbing herself, searching for the burning, the horrible Bird grumbled, rolling over and rubbing her eyes. "Mm.. A?" She asked groggily, sitting up with a yawn, stretching her hands up over her head, her fingernails lengthening into claws as they always did when she stretched. Ava smiled, standing. "Morning." Ava walked over to their little food area, grabbing the deer they'd managed to kill. "Mm breakfast!" Bird said as Ava handed her a piece. Bird tore into it with her surprisingly sharp teeth. "Thanks A." Ava nodded while tearing into her own. "Yup!" Once finished the two scouted the area as always, then practiced their flying, fighting, and hiding skills. And after that, Ava sat bird down. "Bird.. I.. I have something to tell you." Bird tilted her head, her head feathers lifting in surprise. "Go on, I'm listening." Bird said, curious. Ava took a deep breath, twisting her hands together. "I kind of.. Can control fire-" She said it quickly, closing her eyes. After a few moments of silence she peeked her eyes open to see Bird's shocked expression. "What do you mean you can control fire?!" Bird yelled, standing up, her feathers spiked and her nails lengthened. "I can control fire." Was all Ava said. "That doesn't tell me anything!" Bird yelled, now pacing. Suddenly crashing was heard, and both of them got slammed against the cave wall by an invisible force. Both of them screamed as their bodies hit the wall. "Careful! God- We need them dumbasses." A voice said. A voice that was to familiar.. way to familiar.. Ange stepped out of the shadows. "Hello, children. You've given us quite the little goose chase haven't you? Well, It'st time to go home now." Ange smiled, and Bird's and Ava's visions went white, then black. |
