I've noticed that most of the enemies are near or above the level of the lead wolf here. The biggest difference reported is 5 levels, but the enemy was still a high level (15 vs the lead's 20). The lowest lead wolf level reported is 10 (lowest enemy level is 7). These patterns have me wondering if lead wolf and/or enemy level matter.

I have a couple hypotheses and counter-hypotheses:

• Enemies below your level have a lower chance of giving scars, or scar chance scales linearly with enemy level
  
• Players challenge similar-level enemies to optimize EXP gain

• Like chased NBWs, you can only get scars if your lead wolf is at least level 10
• More experienced players are more likely to contribute data

I would love some anecdotal data from people who have submitted data to this thread. Have you only or mostly been fighting enemies around your level? Or have you, say, gotten a scar from a level 10 wolf while fighting lots of level 5 bobcats and getting nothing from them? Are any players below level 10 lurking here, perhaps battling lots to try to get scars? Have you gotten any or have your efforts come up fruitless?
