Help me perfect a pup pricing formula!

Posted 2020-12-09 05:48:52 (edited)

And one other thing that I have noticed ever since early access when I first joined, is that season affect sales of puppies. What I mean is that during winter, pups that are born have lower survival rates and need more pupsitter attention. Pups born in Winter can have survival rates as low as 35% where pups born in Spring can have survival rates as high as 75%, especially the impact of being a runt or a largest pup. In winter, when food is more scarce, space is at a premium. There are a number of people who don't even roll in winter. There are others, like me, who don't breed in winter. I breed the majority of pups in Spring and sell the majority of pups in spring and summer. In Winter, I sell hardly anything at all. This is by design because I noticed the trend that sales dropped off significantly in winter months. I could have the best looking pup in the entire game but if it's winter and the people who would normally want to buy it don't have enough sitters to keep it alive or don't have enough food to add another mouth to their pack, they're going to wait until spring before they buy anything at all. During Early Access I thought this was just a coincidence but we've been through several cycles of Seasons now and it is a repeatable trend over and over. Sales plummet in winter. I have had a fairly popular stud for a couple of Seasons now, and breeding requests drop off in fall and start to pick up again the second or third day of winter. Seasonality has a measurable effect in this game.

I wish I was still in business school because I totally would have done a paper on the economy in this game when I was getting my MBA LOL. Actually I said the same thing about other breeding animal games I play which I won't mention here because I never know if I was violating the new guidelines or not. But pricing in those games is just as ephemeral as pricing in wolvden. What you want to sell something at may not be the same as what another person wants to buy it at and that's the bottom line.

@bonibaru, I can't imagine any base being so unpopular that it pushes the rarity under 0.4 to get the boost. Willow, for instance (since you mentioned it) is 0.84% currently. It might throw off the metric a little when new bases get introduced but that should correct itself quickly enough.

That's a good point about seasons though! I knew some people don't breed in winter, but I didn't think about how much it might make you avoid purchasing wolves. I wonder if the lower survival rating also carries over into people's interest in buying? A pup born in spring may have 100% survival chance by the time its weaned, where a winter born pup probably still needs help from a pupsitter to stay safe. I generally prefer to buy adolescents myself (if I'm shopping for pups I've got a job I want them to do and don't want to wait too long) so I'd never thought about how survival chances might impact a decision to buy.

I thought potato was applied to marking count, not bases?

Potato is a subjective term that people apply to whatever they don't personally like ;)

Bookmarking because a formula would be an amazing addition to moderate the current sale pricings.

i really love this idea, i've been having trouble pricing my own pups as well, but i feel like i tend to go pretty low (25sc - 100sc range). unfortunately, i'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how to use all that math :(

Now that males can form breeding pairs, do you think that will affect their price?

I would assume so, they woukd be an in between on value between what they origionally were and normal studs. They aren't as useful as a female that can be breed to anyone after cool downs or like a stud who can breed 15 times a week, bit they aren't a useless as just a regular male. maybe a modifier of .75?
