Change hunting role "stalker" to "tracker"

Change hunting role "stalker" to "tracker"
Posted 2021-01-04 10:05:35 (edited)

Hunting parties consist of three "chasers", one "finisher" and one "stalker." I propose the title of "stalker" be changed to "tracker" for the following reasons:

ย 1.ย  "Tracker" is a more accurate representation of what the role does. The wolf tracks a scent, the wolf does not "stalk" a scent. Stalking more closely connotes the direct lead up to the pounce a cat does to its prey, creeping low to the ground as quietly as possible to avoid catching the prey's attention. The "stalking" role in Wolvden describes the hunting party following a scent across a fair distance before coming close to the prey, which I believe is far better represented by the word "tracker."

2.ย  "Stalker" has a highly negative connotation in human society, being used to describe a predator (often sexual) continually following and/or harassing a victim and often leading to violence, and even death, perpetrated against the victim. Many, many people become victims of stalkers in their lives, and the experience can be incredibly traumatizing, leaving victims with lifelong issues with PTSD, fear of strangers or people in general, and related mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. In fact the word "stalker" itself can be triggering and upsetting for people to read. Wolvden prides itself on being a safe space for all kinds of people to play and socialize comfortably together. The negative impact of regularly reading the word "stalker" in what is meant to be a pleasant gaming experience should not be underestimated.

For these reasons I propose the word "stalker" be replaced with "tracker" in the hunting party roles on Wolvden.

Support! Seeing the word stalker is always vaguely unsettling to me, especially since a lot of people like to put personality+role in the subline of a wolf. I've seen more than one wolf with "romantic stalker" or "aggressive stalker" in their description and it's awkward at best.

Also like you said, wolves don't really STALK. That's a cat thing.

I like this idea. Stalker was always a little weird to put in my wolves' descriptions xD and tracker seems a lot more accurate.

Would support, not something that bothers me in particular as far as word connotation goes but tracker is more accurate

Support but it does not matter to me if it is changed or not.

The name confused me when I first started playing Wolvden. I was like, yeah makes sense. A hunting party has a stalker. But as I learned about the game more, I found out they were in charge of the different scent trails you can choose from. Tracker makes so much more sense. I support!

Agree. Stalkrr does not bother me but as someone with a social work degree- I know the word can be triggering.

Wouldn't the change confuse most of players who got used to "stalker" term thus far? There are plenty of guides that would have to be updated due to this single term change.

@Dzanek players will get used to it, and as Vixpine said, I also got confused about the term when I was a new player. I imagined stalking as watching prey, following and waiting for the right moment to pounce. "Tracker" makes it much easier to imagine that wolf's role in action, even for someone who doesn't know much about how real wolves hunt.
Plus, there are word processing programs that can edit words in bulk, replace one with the other. I don't think it's too much of an inconvenience.

Preventing confusion for new players and promoting clarity in terminology is more important here, so I support!
