adjusting mobile fishing

adjusting mobile fishing
Posted 2021-02-02 14:17:57 (edited)

after being stuck on my phone for a couple of days i realized there's a slight issue when fishing on mobile.

now, let me preface this by saying that i'm glad it even works on mobile as many sims don't even bother with mobile integration. the issue i have is in no way critical, but a slight change would make it easier for mobile users.

now, let's get into it, shall we

so, when fishing, you are presented with a ring with two moving elements - the green target area and the red bobber. when on pc, the ring is in full in front of you. but when on mobile, your tap being the center point of the ring, you are inevitably covering a chunk of the ring with your finger, no matter which way you put it. the severity of the issue depends, of course, on the size of your screen and the size of your finger, but even biggest screens with smallest fingers will still have partial obstruction. this makes you have to consider not two, but three things, as you have to not only align the green with the red, you also have to do it in the part of the ring you can actually see. with some fish being hard enough to catch as is, an extra obstacle makes itΒ  harder to succeed.

i've been mulling over ideas to fix this and came up with a couple.

now, i know next to nothing about coding and what will be needed to execute any of these, but i'll present them in order of what to me seems easiest. all of the ideas have a quick visual representation of how i imagine they'd look like.

1. make your tap a corner point instead of center

simple as it sounds, just move the ring so that your finger is the corner of it. that way the ring will appear above and aside your finger, enabling you to see it without obstruction.

2. make it a line rather than a ring

in this case, i imagine a straight line above your finger where all other elements function the same way they did in the ring, but allowing you full visibiluty of the entire thing.

3. expanding rings

this one to me seems like the farthest stretch, but it was the first thing i thought of so i'll still include it here. the idea is, instead of rotating elements, have two rings expand and contract throughout the entire circle, so that no matter how little of it you see, all of the neccessary elements are still present and alignable.

so yeah, that's about all i have to show and tell for now, feel free to voice your thoughts on this or offer some other ways in which this could be done!

Support. It took me a few days to get used to mobile fishing because my finger would block part of the ring and I would instinctively pull my finger up in order to see the whole thing.

I've now gotten into the habit of sliding my finger under the circle after tapping but it would be nice to not have to move at all, with the ring automatically spawning above the ripple when you tap

+1 to option 1. Right now you can just move your finger out of the way of the circle so this would be same thing, just more user friendly.

-1 for option 2. and 3. Both 'aiming' methods are harder to use in my opinion, especially in those cases when both red and green part are moving.Β

You can already move your finger away from the circle after you tap.

You have to tap, keep your finger pressed and slide away from the circle (keeping the pression on the screen) and then release like normal.

It's a tip Mods themselves shared in the News comments (here). They say it's a workaround but it seems to me that works quite well.

Maybe it would be a good idea to add a little note for mobile players on the game page that they can do that.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread; I like these ideas and also want to suggest my own tiny and related UX enhancement: adding user-select: none; to the canvas to prevent the user from highlighting the element.

This often occurs on iOS as I'm quickly sliding my finger down to better view the circle or trying to double-click/zoom into the game.
