I don't know if this helps, but I've been testing NBWs for melanism for a while as well, I've tested 92 so far with no success.

5 NBWs tested plus my companion wolf, but no dice. 

Checked both starter wolves, and no carriers

I found an NBW Melanism carrier after testing about 300 NBWs with Gene, and I tested about 500 NBWs with the Scrying Stone before that for Albinism with no success.

I imagine the rates are the same for Albinism and Melanism, Brachy is confirmed to be rarer though!

So the odds seem very low or I've just been getting very unlucky, definitely needs more proper reports before we can really make any conclusions!

In that case, how do we have any carriers? Where do they come from if not NBW at some point in their heritage?
