Development Update #11

Development Update #11
Posted 2021-07-23 15:33:19 (edited)
It's time for another development update - this time it's development update #11!

First up, we have...

Adolescent Apprenticeships

To begin, a new unique quest called Mastering the Craft that explains this is now available to you if:
  • You have completed the majority of the starting unique quests.
  • You have had at least 12 rollovers on your account.
Apprentice Role

From this day forward, all adolescent wolves are automatically assigned the role 'Apprentice'. This role cannot be set or unset and is default, and means that the adolescent can begin training for new roles. This can be seen via the 'Pack Role' tab on wolf pages for adolescents now, that previously was just for adult wolves.

As adolescents can no longer participate in puppy lessons to be trained, they have to now be trained a different way.

If your account has had at least 12 rollovers, you will now be able to start bringing apprentices along when your adult wolves are completing their usual tasks.

Hunting Apprentices

Up to 3 apprentices can follow along on a hunt to observe each of the hunting roles. Meanwhile, one apprentice can follow a scout, one apprentice can watch a herbalist at work and one apprentice can discuss pupsitting techniques with a pupsitter! However, please note, the adults completing the task must have at least 20% proficiency in their role in order for apprentices to learn with them - there's no use having a novice teaching the next generation!

Apprentices gain 3-5% proficiency for the role they observe. They don't hinder adults in their tasks, but they do lose a small amount of energy on their own. Apprentices can be trained once per day. Additionally, they can gain a maximum of 20% proficiency in any role, and proficiency will still decay daily. Don't despair, though! It should be very easy to get to the 20% cap in a role by the time they age up, and each training sessions gives them the chance to earn a maximum of 2 stats related to the role, too!

Pupsitter Interface Update

New Pupsitter Interface

We have given the pupsitter page a small interface update. Now, after selecting the pupsitter from the dropdown, all of the information for that pupsitter (including a handy headshot!) will display, as well as the list of puppies currently protected by that pupsitter, and the list of unprotected puppies.

Additionally, you're now able to remove puppies from a pupsitter's protection here, as well as see all of their survival chances, to better help you make the decisions you need to when protecting your precious offspring!

HTML Editor Updates

It's no secret that the fancy editor that we have all come to know and... use... had some flaws. We decided that it was time to take matters into our own hands and come up with a solution that would make for a more robust editing experience.

While the WYSIWYG interface is no longer, a much more powerful interface has come to take its place. It may have fewer buttons, however, it comes with the advantage of allowing more raw HTML.

Profile & Den

The profile and den pages now include a section to directly add CSS files, without needing to add them in your HTML. This gives the added bonus of being able to toggle off HTML and CSS separately. With this update comes a live preview button, allowing you to see exactly how your pages will look without having to save them first. It also gives you a real time count of how many characters you're using, so you don't have to play guessing games!

One nifty little feature that CSS makers can take advantage of is the ability to style elements based on the viewer's selected site theme. So for example, if you wanted to show a night themed layout to someone using the site with the "Dark" theme enabled, and a daytime themed layout to someone using the "Default" theme, now you can!

All you need to do is prefix your class rules with body.theme_dark and body.theme_default to give them a unique appearance based on the viewer's theme.
For a basic example of how this would look, you can check out Michael's den and see what it looks like when you switch themes.

Forum Posts

This same style editor is also part of the forums. Not only can you preview your posts live, now you can add emotes just like in chat!

Also...
We now have spoiler tags! If you want to change the text of the spoiler button, you can add text="Whatever you want to say!" to the tag. For example, the code for this button looks like: <spoiler text="Spoiler alert!">

To make room for some of the changes to the editor, we shifted around some other elements when viewing topics. The "Bump" and "Report" buttons have moved to the top of every page of a topic, as has the option to Subscribe or Unsubscribe. Previously when a post was edited, you would only see that timestamp. Now you can see both! The original timestamp will always be visible, and when a post has been edited, you can hover over the "(edited)" text to see when it was last edited.

Safari Dropdown Issues

Many of you who use Safari and also the dark theme have noticed that something isn't quite right with the dropdown menus. They're quite difficult to read. It is an unfortunate fact that Safari does not allow you to easily style certain elements. With this update, however, we have tried to make them much easier to read and more uniform across browsers.

Before After

Conclusion

We hope that you enjoy these updates! With the new editor, there may be some learning curve and some tweaks that need to be made. One of the features that many of you may notice is the lack of font styles and font colors from the editor menu. When it comes to the forums and messages, these do not combine well between the different themes. Someone using the dark theme may use light colors in their posts or messages, making them unviewable to those on the default theme. In the future, if more themes are added, this becomes even more problematic between color shifts.

While we do not provide the tools directly to manage colors on your den and profile, please know that you are more than welcome to adjust these via your HTML and CSS!

We will look into adding a guide to the various ins-and-outs of HTML and how it can be used in the various areas.
