The Story Behind Copperhead Pass

In a time before, the prairie in which Copperhead Pass rests was a vast, empty meadow. Meadows can be unassuming like that, filled with flowers and grasses of different lengths. Yet the prairie held its own secrets.

Down underneath the lull of the grassy hills lay an odd valley, one surrounded by the remnants of what used to be the banks of a deep lake. What remained was a dry, cracked, yet somehow almost flat piece of land. Grass hardly touched the area, too afraid to grow in the cracks where water once covered them. Travelers often crossed by the empty pond, once seeking water only to find it dried and empty.

And dried and empty it would stay. Empty, that is until a band of wolves arrived.

Yet, there was something wrong with the land. It was something about how the winds sailed over the grass or how the moon looked at night. Something was wrong, and they hardly saw it coming.

The Laws of Copperhead Pass
1. The Community

1.1 Respect the laws and authorities of Copperhead Pass. The Law is the justice and peacekeepers of the town. To defy them and the rules is to bring danger to everyone around you. Punishment will be served without hesitation to those who pose a threat.
1.2 Members must not steal from the town or personal stores. Resources are made available for everyone, so stealing is forbidden and unnecessary. Payment must always be given or it is counted as theft.
1.3 All major decisions must go through a majority vote. Once a month the population of Copperhead Pass is gathered to deliver news and suggestions for the town. Popular suggestions or additions to the area will be voted upon before being put into place.
1.4 Occupations. Occupations can be picked up by anyone, even ex-prisoners (who proved themselves worthy of release, of course). New businesses must be brought to the attention of the sheriff and are illegal without permission.

2. Religion & Rituals

2.1 Free religion. Wolves may take their existing faith with them to Copperhead and practice as they wish.
2.2 Ghosts are real. While Copperhead Pass allows any faith, wolves must pay attention to the spirits of the area. At night they can be dangerous. Those who doubt their existence may find themselves injured or worse.
2.3. Bodies must be burned. To set the soul free after death, the body must be burnt. Loved one's ashes or other remains may be kept, however, the body must not be buried, lest a spirit posses it and bring it up to haunt the town.
2.4 Stay inside. It isn't uncommon to hear a stray wail in the night or the call of your name in the distance at dusk and night. Disregard this call and stay in your den as it is likely a spirit's trap.

Ranches a fat WIP

Ranches are owned by the community but worked by a select few. Ranches will often be fenced with a main holding paddock or two and the ranchers may even choose to set up homes close to the ranges.

Stock animals often are herded out onto the prairie to graze and watched throughout the day by the ranchers so that they don’t overgraze the pens. Ranchers tend to return their animals back to the safety of the fire-lit paddocks lest their stock be killed by roaming spirits.

Animals are often only killed by necessity, whether that be food, pelts, or overpopulation. Ranges will also usually try to keep one or two males and ranchers will try to keep and raise any offspring. The ranchers must plan which and how many they’ll kill, but the sheriff must approve. The sheriff must also approve the creation of new ranches.

Ranch 1 (Creative, right?)
- Created Year 1, spring
- Pronghorn: 6 doe, 1 buck

Farms

We grow chickens :)

Farms probably just grow material for houses, items, spice, and house small animals like grouse, prairie chickens, and pheasants

Death
Work In Progress still. I'll compress it later

this was in response to a discussion question: What sort of funeral/mourning rite does your pack have?

"hmm For mine, I've written down that all bodies must be burned in the event of a death. This is to prevent spirits finding, possessing, and bringing back dead wolves to harass the living. It is mostly rumored and seldom seen, but those in Copperhead Pass hold a lot of truth to it and the older wolves claim to have seen it for themselves at times past. Bodies can be burned with any of their flammable possessions such as pelts, necklaces, etc. and the ashes can be kept by anyone who knew them, usually lovers or family. Unknown wolves or citizens who have no one to take their ashes would have their ashes scattered by the wind into the prairie, almost as if they are becoming one with the grasslands. Maybe they'd say a few words in respect? I don't think there would be a death penalty squints um but idk maybe, Declan certainly wouldn't order it bu t idk man maybe someone in the future would. If there were bandits who came into town and died in a brawl they'd also get the burning but there'd probably be no real ceremony or mourning for outlaws or despised wolves. For now, I haven't thought of any mourning processes, maybe everyone gathers for a meal after a pyre burning, maybe they carve some trinkets in memory for the family/lover of the dead, if they were well-liked the mood would be solemn probably"
