Development Update #14

Posted 2021-12-20 12:52:14 (edited)
I would honestly suggest making rare drops like trophies unplayble and sorted to Other or a trophies tab and removing the concept of remnants. Most players didn't use trophies as a source of amusement anyway so this shouldn't be seen as a loss of amusement items. Food items used in crafting could produce trophies when eaten that are used in their place (rabbit carcass -> rabbit pelt, for example.)

This:

- inherently makes sense to people as it's close to the way the system originally worked
- maintains the site aesthetic by not requiring a new item category with a border
- doesn't require the release of new remnant forms for trophies when a recipe using them is finally released, so people don't have to carefully leave specific things at 1 use in case of future recipes (vs doing it with everything if desired, which doesn't require as much player attention)
- doesn't spam up the inventory with Remnants items the player might not even be able to use if they don't have the right recipes
- food craftables would now be adding a whole new item when a recipe is released which I think would go over better than "oop only NOW it makes remnants - all the ones from before don't count sorry" - it's like a new item drop. Alternately to avoid item spam once again you could have a button in the hoard to "salvage" the food trophy from the food, turning rabbits into rabbit pelts etc.
- for the sake of amusement items used in crafting you could add a checkbox to FAPA and the hoard stack menu to leave items with 1 use remaining.
- actually if you ever want to add a crafter/stocktaking type wolf role, processing a carcass into (carcass-specific trophy) + meat scraps seems like cool functionality. Actually I have some ideas about that, I'm gonna make a suggestion post. :>

I don't think remnants are particularly Bad with a capital b, I just think this way would solve its own problems/give users less to feel inconvenienced about.

Remnants might've become the first reason why it could be worth to manage a huge pack.

Christmas is coming early for lots of R&C pups, this is the happiest they've been in their short lives 🥲

im gonna add my two cents here:

having the ability to manually convert items is a BAD solution. this would mean you would have to manually click on an item and convert them. this would be extremely time consuming and stressful. i do not want to have to go through 20 of an item converting it just to get ONE background.

as a neurodivergent disabled person who has amnesia and trouble focusing i will find crafting a single item at times impossible if they require remnants. i do enjoy some of the perks remnants bring and dont think they should be removed, but i believe they should become optional and usable alongside regular items in the crafting tab.

if you could select multiple at once to convert im still not a fan of this. i want to be able to quickly go to my crafting tab, find the recipe and craft it. (I impulse craft a lot) i have nearly every recipe in game, it is difficult to find recipes already because i have to scroll through 113 of them, i dont want to have the added frustration of finding out i dont have enough remnants and need to go make some more.

examples of recipes with high counts of remnants:
chattering parakeets (20x parrot feather)
chilling blue jays (20x blue jay feather)
cozy nest (15x essence-covered feather)
falcon's nest (20x peregrine falcon feather)
hunting barn owl (20x owl feather)
leftover bones (30x bone)
roaming chickens (20x chicken egg)
seaside gull flock (20x gull feather)
swan lake (20x swan feather)

and theres a lot more with 10x, i just highlighted the ones with 15+

like i said above, i proposed in a development post that remants remain optional and can be used alongside items and are considered priority. they still have value this way. i feel like this would satisfy everyone and allow people who have difficulty navagating to easily craft.

edit: wanna note here that i do want the ability to convert, i just dont want to be forced to do it to craft. i do enjoy some of the perks that remnants bring specifically for food items. but again i wanna be able to normally use my items.

Oh my gosh, just realized that illness farming is gunna become something more people get into now, just to have the mood drop doubly

Realized via this idea from above/few pages back Remnants might've become the first reason why it could be worth to manage a huge pack.

Kas raises another point, though not explicitly stated. The switch from items to remnants makes it more convoluted to tell when scrolling your recipe list if you actually have the ingredients to craft a recipe because they can be split between normal and remnant forms, even when not buried.

I love this update. I have a large pack and playing with them was SO much faster. I usually dread that at the end of the day, but this changes that. Thank you. The feeding was much better too. Yes it gives the whole stack, but I just stopped part way through and went back to the stacks to choose those rotting sooner a couple of times. Still much faster than it was.

The remnants I love too. I also had a bunch of background I could no longer craft, but with a large pack I can figure of which ones I need and get them done fairly quickly. If anyone with smaller pack needs help with turning their full use bones into remnants I'm sure there would be lots of large packs out there willing to help you. :)  Maybe someone can get a service going on that? Or allow the items themselves to be used in addition to remnants as many have suggested.

I am a little nervous about not knowing which items will make a remnant visually. Like I save all my trophies hoping someday they will be used in crafting. I'd hate to use up all my skulls only to find I now have nothing because they don't craft anything yet. Some way to know those items will not give a remnant before I use them all up would be helpful.

So far I love it.

Edit to add that having the Lunar items used in crafting that rot now able to be converted to remnants is great. I never get enough of them to craft before they rot. Now the remnants will wait until I do. Awesome
