Since it does take place in the Americas, could be earthquakes, but also geysers and similar activity, depending on the area.

yep, i live near to a quarry, and whenever they use explosives, we can hear it tho theyre a few miles away
im thinking the sane thing, except instead of a quarry, maybe a mining operation(s) with dynamite?
