Chantaey's Wolvlocke: CE Game 2 - Ended

Day 11: Winter, Year 1

Finally there is good news to share. Despite the deep cold of the Taiga, we have made it past deep winter. The days are beginning to lengthen again, though slowly. It does not seem to affect the cold but there is a little hope behind those few extra minutes it takes for the sun to sink below the horizon each day.

Haya has finally managed to do away with her pests--no more signs of itching--and it does not seem to have spread to her companion. Their hunting is still going poorly, though I can see their increasing determination each time they set out on a hunt. It has been a lean winter, though honestly not so lean as I expected. They must be finding something to eat; though they grow thinner, it is not the thinness of starvation.

And lastly, possibly most excitingly for me, our pair has begun traveling with yet another male. Haya is rough with him and Maleko seems to ignore him for the most part, so I think his presence is mostly tolerated for the help he might provide in hunting. I've named him Amanecer as it's starting to feel like the sun is finally shining again.

Day 12: Winter, Year 1

After all that positivity . . . Almanecer has been chased from the pack by Haya. After just a couple weeks he started to show signs of ear mites--scratching constantly at his ears, whining. He seemed utterly miserable and became useless on their hunts. On one such occasion I saw him drop his head to the ground in the middle of a chase and simply start rubbing his ears in the snow. I felt badly for him--obviously uncomfortable and in pain, but Haya was quite brutal to him.

I've seen wolves chased from other packs before and it is not unusual for it to be an unpleasant event, but Haya's mean streak really came out against poor Almanecer. At first when she attacked him I thought it was another lesson in dominance, as she's always quite rough, and I expect Almanecer thought the same as he was quick to show his belly and concede to her, but she only took the opportunity wound him further. I have to believe she didn't mean to kill him--certainly she could have in that moment--but I'll never know for certain.

Almanecer was already weak, you see; although his presence had moderately helped their hunting efforts, and provided enough food for Haya and Maleko to gain back a good portion of their weight, there had not been enough left over for Almanecer to eat at all. With the trust between dominant and subordinate broken, I watched him take to fleeing. Haya chased him relentlessly, biting at his legs and haunches as though he were prey. I lost sight of them eventually and I have no idea if he escaped her, but weak and wounded as he was, I worry he won't make it to spring, or will only be a meal for scavengers if he does.

Of course, had the mites spread and affected Haya and Maleko as badly, all of them may very well have starved to death. Cruel as it was, I have to accept that Haya may have acted in the interest of survival. Maleko, for his part, all but ignored the entire event and does not seem concerned at the absence of their third pack member. I hope they all survive but I do end this report with a heavy heart.

Day 15: Spring, Year 1

So far these first few weeks of spring have been a time of abundance, as expected. Haya and Maleko have been able to eat their fill of food and I've even witnessed them storing their surplus away in a cache for later. After a hard winter of determined but unproductive hunting, the two stalk and chase and take down prey together like a well-oiled machine. Spring will undoubtedly be the easiest season for them to hunt, but regardless, their synergy is worlds better than it was at their meeting in autumn. They were even able to take down their first small prey recently--a porcupine--and a far better meal than the stoats and muskrats they've been surviving on these last few months.

Day 19: Summer, Year 1

There are more events to report on here at the beginning of summer! A few weeks back it appeared Haya may have been stricken with fleas again. I worried briefly it might have been something worse, like the affliction that got their third pack member chased off after such a short stay, but she seemed simply to be itchy all over and just as soon as the symptoms appeared, they went away again.

Her recovery had great timing, as with her renewed energy it became clear she was in heat. Judging by the time the two have been together, I suspect she's been in heat in the company of Maleko before but never showed an interest in him. That was not the case this spring and with the way her belly swells I expect the pack will officially be a pack and have pups in a few short weeks!

Their hunting continues to go well, though I can't say for sure they will fare any better in the upcoming autumn and winter than they did the last. It's becoming clear to me that this region is a difficult one to hunt in, and despite their synergy and cooperation, they may just be a little out of their element. I remain hopeful with pups on the way--if they are able to raise them to adulthood perhaps their hunting will fare better still. But it is quite a long way before the pups are that old--I'm really getting ahead of myself!

In the meantime, Haya's extra weight seems to have slowed them down a little. Although Maleko strives to pick up the slack, neither of them seems to have the energy to follow as many game trails as they have in the past. Still, they have their stockpile and neither of them is close to going hungry, even with Haya's increased appetite.
