"Shades are cursed," The king said. "They should be treated as such. They are not even classified as kitso's!" The people followed the king, except when it came to female Shades, like Samia or Kaia Amari Tanyikarthinso. Female Shades were valuble slaves and wives, known to be simple and weak of mind. All Shades were below even the hybrid warroirs, Durastikitso's. Raven knew this was unfair treatment to his fellow Shades. He hated it. He wanted to help his friends and family- wait, he had no friends. But he was kept in his room, hidden from the world because of his growing power. On his 11th birthday, his mother got him an amplifier, to contain his power. It was a fetter made of pure dragon scales. But it did not work. His father took him out of the house, to a dragon's nest. There, Raven slew the mother dragon for himself. Bringing back the scales to Shade Sankta's Banshitori friend, a crafter of sorts. Banshitori weren't Hrasha, but they weren't human either. Most Ravkian's hated Banshitori's because they were made by Hrasha Malenchikitso's, the Hrasha hell beasts. This Banshitori was different though. Her name was Kansoma and she was a respected Banshitori among the Hrasha and Ravkian communities. Kansoma agreed to make the scales of the dragon into a permanent fetter around Raven's left wrist. By the time it was done, Raven knew that his power would grow much stronger than anyone had ever imagined. He returned home with his father. But that is when the anarchy began. I knew my power would grow, but I did not expect it to grow as quickly as it did. On the walk home, I asked Father something that set everything into motion. "Why do I have an amplifier but Samia doesn't?" I asked. "She is a girl, she does not deserve one," Father replied. I had asked my question just as Samia had rounded the corner. Father's answer infuriated her. She attacked him, but I defended him. I lashed out at Samia with a Cut, not aiming for her but still hitting her. I had not meant to. I ran to her side, trying to heal her. My father called out for an Alkemikitso but no one came. Why would they? We were Shades. Mother came running, but by then, Samia had died in my arms. I did not cry, I never cried. I stood as two guards ran forward. One guard was a female Lavkersesikitso, a heart renderer. The other was a male Shanugyakitso. I knew I was in trouble. So I ran, ducking past other Hrasha who shouted and tried to grab me. I dodged beams of light from the Shanugyakitso guard, returning a few strikes with a focused Cut, barely missing and almost hitting the Lavkersesikitso female a few times. I did not care. I kept running until I could run no longer. By then, I had reached the forest. I looked up at the sound of a familiar voice. "You ran," It was Kaia Amari Tanyikarthinso, my old friend. "Would you have ran?" I retorted. "No," Kaia brushed off my bitter tone. "Because you are a Durastikitso," I scoffed. "I'm still half Shades." "Really?" This was news to me, I had thought she was half Malenchikitso and half Corproalkitso. Though a Malenchikitso could learn to master the same craft as a Shades. "When have I ever lied?" "Multiple times." "Valid. Need somewhere to stay?" "Why would you offer? I killed your best friend, my zancheosta of a sister." "You really can't take a simple act of kindness, can you?" "Sorry. I guess I just cannot imagine why you would help me." "Because I'm your friend? And I care about you?" "Thanks," I managed a half smile. Kaia smiled and offered her hand, which I accepted and let her help me stand. I brushed the dirt off my xyekta and sighed. "Lead the way," I said. Kaia winked then pulled me behind her, kicking up a soft breeze that lifted us off our feet as we ran. "Toss me up," I called over the sound of the rushing wind. Kaia laughed and summoned a gust of wind that tossed me a few feet into the air. I spread my arms, using shadows and my cloak to lift me higher. I glided along beside Kaia, laughing. It was just like old times, the two of us playing in the forest, carefree. But we both soon tired and I landed, closing my hand as the shadows disappeared. Kaia slowed the breeze until it was no longer there. We lay on the ground in the meadow, laughing and panting. "See why I followed you?" Kaia laughed. "Not all Durastikitso's and Shades are bad," I responded, as I always did after we played. Kaia stopped laughing. "Is that true anymore, Raven?" She asked. "I-" I hesitated. Was it? She had a point. "Of course." "You said it yourself, you killed your own sister, my best friend," Kaia's voice was hard, cold, something I did not like. "Not on purpose," I gasped, offended. "Are you insinuating that I have gone bad?" "Yes, in fact. I am," Kaia spat, rising to her feet. I stood as well. "Kaia, please," I begged. "It's over, Raven. Have fun alone in life, Shades," Kaia said. "Thanks for falling for it." As Kaia walked away, Hrasha of all types surrounded me. I should have known Kaia would betray me. Was she even a Corporalkitso? What was she? I threw a quick Cut at Kaia, hoping to force her to reveal herself. And she did. She spun, dodging the Cut and returning with a half shadow, half sunlight, Cut of her own just as she threw a gust of wind in my face. The other Hrasha moved forward, closing the gap between them and me. I could flee again, be known as a defector, or get captured, live life being tortured by Lavkersesikitso's. Neither was the better option. I put up a shield between me and the other Graysha. "Kaia. Please. I am sorry," I begged. "Kill him," Kaia commanded. The other Hrasha attacked, Corporalkitso's buffeting my shield with wind, Shanugyakitso's blinding me with their sunlight, even Malenchikitoso's summoning Banshitori and pelting me with them. I dropped my shield suddenly, using the Corporalkitso winds to propel me upwards. I soared over the others, twisting past Cuts that should have hit me, weaving through Summons. I would not tire, not this time. I felt the fetter giving me strength, and I called on it, using it to go farther. I retaliated once or twice, throwing Cuts that cut down tens of Hrasha. I looked up to see Kaia soaring above me, held up on wings of light with her Corporalkitso wind helping support her more. Of course she was a Shanugyakitso-Corporalkitso-Shades Durastikitso. Of course she was. My name is Kaia, daughter of many. You may know me as a killer, or just a simple triple inbred Durastikitso. Some would say I'm more of a Shades, but my Shanugyakitso and Corporalkitso linage say otherwise. My triple linage makes me a powerful queen- well, almost queen, I'm the queen's heir. I don't know why I'm bothering to continue Raven Amaxi Altalune's story in this notebook. I hate him. Maybe it's so I can do him justice, or maybe I just wish I had done things differently. Either way, it doesn't matter now. I watched as Raven closed his hands, his shadow wings dissipating. As he fell, I could hear his words. "Please, Kaia. Do not be a killer. I am sorry," He cried. I had let him fall. I didn't give him a second chance. That's what the stories say. But I did give him that chance. I dove after him, reaching for his outstretched hand. He was falling fast though, pain and betrayal written across his face. He didn't want to do this, I knew. I cried out as he threw a single shadowy Cut at my wing, throwing me off course. I spiraled out of control, my wing disappearing. I couldn't bring myself back on course, I could only watch as Raven fell faster, hitting the ground with a sickening crunch. I hit the ground from two feet up, managing to roll safely to my feet. I ran to him, tears already falling. Before the others could come, I brushed away the tears and closed his black flame eyes. I stood just as my mentor, Yanmita, ran to me. "Are you alright?" Yan asked. "Yeah," I replied. Just then, Raven's body dissolved, a trick. "Stupid zancheosta," I muttered. "We all fell for that. Wait, how did it fight? A projection can't use the Cut or any other spell, much less fly or speak." "Valid. But a simple projection after I fell would work just fine," A voice said from behind me. Yan summoned two swords of light, leave it to my Shanugyakitso mentor to summon swords instead of something useful, like dogs, or Banshitori. |

"And why should I listen to you?" Yan snarled. "Because I can kill you," Raven snarled back. "But you wouldn't!" Yan gasped. "I would," Raven growled. This wasn't the Raven Amaxi Altalune I knew. Something was wrong. Something big was wrong, and it was growing bigger. I took a step towards Raven, holding out my hand. "Please, Raven," I said softly. "We don't need to fight." "If you were not so naive, Kaia, I would pity you," His voice held something ice cold, deadly. "This isn't you. Whatever it is, it isn't you," I insisted. "It is me, it always has been me. I just hid it well," Raven responded. I shook my head. "Whatever it is you want, I won't try to stop you." "Then you will tell Yanmita to stand down and get out of my way," Raven snapped. "I can't do that," I said sadly. Raven shook his head. "Then I do not regret what I am about to do." Time slowed. I didn't know what was happening. Everything was dark. What was I supposed to do? I looked around, but I couldn't see anything. I wasn't sure I wanted to. I heard Yan's screams, Raven's laughter, my own rapid breathing. Then nothing. It was dead silent. As the light returned, Raven was gone. It took me a moment to notice the liquid pooling around my feet. I looked down, it was blood. Yan's blood. I gasped in horror. Yan was on the ground, split in half, dead. I looked up as I heard something rustling in the bushes. From the bushes burst a small puppy. It was black, with silver eyes and a wet pink nose. It looked exhausted. When it saw me, it froze, shivering in fear. "I won't hurt you," I whispered in Ravkian, Ravki's native language. The puppy yipped but it didn't come forward. It was scared. |

"Come on, it's alright," I said. It hesitated then padded forward a few feet, still shivering. I smiled but kept my hand still, not wanting to spook the puppy. I had worked with animals before. Just then, the puppy began barking. I jumped, surprised. Then I heard it too. Someone was singing the very song Raven and I used to sing together. It was a girl's voice. "When your dreams they fail and the ones we hail are the worst of all, and the blood's run stale. I wanna hide the truth, I wanna shelter you, but with the beast inside, there's nowhere we can hide," The girl sang. I felt compelled to continue her song but I did not. I could hear her footsteps. She was near the tree line. Her song had stopped though, as if she was waiting for me. I stood, looking around warily. "Who's there?" I called. I heard a sharp gasp from behind me then the sound of someone running. I turned and saw a girl in a black xyekta fleeing. "Wait!" I shouted. The girl hesitated, glancing back at me. I could see the fear in her eyes. "They say it's what you make, I say it's up to fate. It's woven in my soul, I need to let you go," I began slowly, my voice breaking only once as I sang. To my surprise, the girl responded. "Your eyes, they shine so bright. I wanna save that light, I can't escape this now, unless you show me how." I smiled. "What's your name?" I asked. "Br-briar. Briar Rose," The girl replied. "My name is Kaia. Kaia Amari Tanyikarthinso," I said. The girl, Briar, let out a gasp and stumbled backward, fear sparking in her eyes. "Y-you! You're a-a monster!" Brair stammered, catching herself before she fell back. "What do you mean?" I asked. "Get away from me!" My name is Briar Rose Tanyikarthinso, but everyone calls me Briar or Briar Rose. And by the way, I'm genderfluid, so deal with that if you don't want to irritate me. Most Ravkians don't know that Kaia Amari Tanyikarthinso is my sister. It's not something I advertise. Anyway, should I continue the story Raven and Kaia were telling? Yes? Then shut up and listen. I wasn't afraid of Kaia, really, but I knew she was friends with the corrupted Shades boy. I backed away, stumbling, but catching myself. |

"The boy- what- how-?" I stammered. "What about him? He's just a boy," Kaia prompted. "The Cut!? Yanmita!? Is that normal!?" I yelped. "No- but-" "But what? But he's your friend? But he's unstable? But he's a killer?" I snapped, angry now. "Alright, that's fair," Kaia relented. "It's true," I snapped. "Briar Rose, what do you even want?" Kaia snapped back. "I want your alliance, sister," I replied. "What did you just call me?" "I said, I want your alliance, sister." "What did you say your name was?" "Briar Rose Tanyikarthinso." "Wait, what was that last word?" "Tanyikarthinso?" "Saints forgive me. The hell is that possible?" |

It was time to go, I knew it. With the new girl and Kaia talking, I could not be sure who to trust. I turned and disappeared in a swirl of shadows. I reappeared a few moments later in my room at the Little Castle. I glanced around, it was empty, nothing had been moved. I flinched as the door to my room opened. "Altalune," A voice purred. I did not turn around like I knew I was supposed to. "General Kimasu." "I'm surprised to see you here," The false kindness in the General's voice bothered me, but I did not say that outloud. "Why do I share the pleasure of you entering my room without permission?" I asked, trying to keep the cold from my voice as the shadows danced on the walls, straining towards Kimasu and only my will holding them back. "Calm the shadows and I'd be glad to explain," Kimasu replied. "I hold them back just as you hold back the light," I growled. "Watch your tone, boy." "Call me that one more time and I will let the shadows devour you," I snarled, turning on Kimasu. I knew he could see the gleam in my eyes, the hunger to kill, but I did not care. "Alright. I won't. I just want to talk," Kimasu held up his hands as if to surrender. I shook my head. I was not a fool. But I would play his game. "What do you want?" "I want," Kimasu looked around quickly before continuing. "King Hadrian dead." "And what is in it for me?" "Well, you can become the general and you can have my daughter Ravu." I laughed. "I do not want Ravu. My heart is to another already." "Who? I can give her to you." "Ki, the Chayo map maker boy." "Oh- uh- then I can give him to you." "He is dating your daughter." "Um…" Kimasu hesitated, clearly surprised and otherwise mentally broken at the news that I was gay, not that I cared. "I am not killing the king." Kimasu shrugged. "Then you won't get the boy, I'll have him executed in the morning." "Hadrian will never agree," I said as I turned away from Kimasu, sliding the mess of papers on my desk into a neat pile. "Don't count your velcro chicks before the eggs hatch," Kimasu laughed maliciously then left. I heard the general's footsteps leaving my room and smirked. I removed the bug from the pile of papers and turned it in my hands. How long has this been here for? I knew the answer, as long as I had been away. That meant that Kimasu's words against Hadrian and threats against Ki had been recorded. Perfect for me. I looked around quickly for any more bugs or cameras before taking out my ear buds. They were not really ear buds but I called them that so I could keep their true identity a secret. As I walked outside calmly, I was met with hostile glares and whispers. I brushed them off as I went to the dungeons. It was time. Time for me to get myself captured, that is. |
