Does levels in explore correspond stats when befriended?

What the title says. If I am exploring and meet wolves that I can befriend. Would a wolf that I can battle that says “level 19” have higher stats when befriended, than a wolf in say “level 5” would have? |

I don't believe so, I'm pretty sure it's only for if you decide to fight them. |
