How do I prevent someone else from still claiming it? For Example, my art name is Autumn Armogan (also the name of my pack rn). It is basically a persona of mine and username that I've been using for awhile now. As far as I know that is not a real name that someone has, but what if someone named that or who claims to be named that or claims that it is their username ect. What if they start claiming my art? |

I saw that people steal art by just erasing the watermark from the background and nailing it (Ex. Watermark is located in a corner, the corner is simply cut from the art) Maybe just put your signature instead of a username watermark |

For example, when I was younger, I'd use a stylised version of the letters DD overlapping. I don't really feel the need to watermark things myself because I'm a noob at drawing and no one's gonna steal this high-effort/low-quality stuff but artists I commission tend to usually make their signature either really close to the lineart or overlapping with it. That way, they don't have to fear that someone will erase it. For example, this cute piece by PastureOfSheep (#53857) has a noticeable watermark beside the lineart, where it's probably harder for someone to delete it without damaging the art itself. Something you can also do is lower the opacity a little and have it over the picture itself. For example, the artist could've written it over Ratte's shirt or the sweater, although some artists don't like doing that since they feel like it takes away from the art. It's just an option to consider! As for how to stop people from still claiming it's yours... I don't know. I think the best thing you can do is save a few works in progress of each piece you make and then if anyone accuses you of stealing art, you can prove that you made it. I actually do this when commissioning artwork - I save the work in progress pieces on my computer. That way, if someone uses artwork that was made for me or claims that they made it, I can contact the moderators of that website and say "hey, this person is using stolen artwork and/or claiming to be the creator. It was created by (Artist's Name) for me and I can prove it because I have the WIP pictures and that person won't have them." From then on, you just provide the artist's preferred contact information to the mods if they want to verify it personally. In your case, that part isn't necessary since, y'know, you are the artist! |

Would it be too much of I added both a signature by/on the lines and used a slightly transparent watermark on the same art? |

Personally, I don't think so. I think it'd look fine, but your mileage may vary with other users lol. I...kind of hate when I commission art and the watermark is too transparent/hard to see because again, it's hard to see. That makes it harder for both me as the owner of the piece and the original artist to go "hey, you stole that! stop!" I'm not going to link any pieces because I don't want this to be a callout thread, it's every artist's choice how they want to protect their artwork, I personally just prefer watermarks that are more visible/on the nose than those that aren't. I mean, knock on wood, I haven't had someone try and steal my art before but I'm a little paranoid about that happening and for both the artist's sake and mine, I prefer watermarks that are easy to see/read. |

I'm just in the odd camp where I'd be fine with people just using big capital letters on the image going "MADE BY (ARTIST)" lmao But yeah, save your works in progress. They'll help you if someone tries to steal artwork. If you use toyhouse, you can upload them there and have them hidden for everyone but you. That way no one can see them but you know they're around if you need them. Other websites probably can do the same for you but I don't use multiple websites for my art... probably should, now that I think of it. |

It's impossible to completely keep someone from stealing you artwork: almost any watermark can be erased if you've got sufficient skill, people can trace, and most people don't check that the poster's username fits with the signature. It may be useful to try to keep people from stealing your YCHs, because they can be immediately resold with little skill, so making a bigger/overlay watermark is efficient, and the greyscale base is not the final artwork, but imo not for full paintings. Look at people who draw really really well and professionally or semi-professionally (link link link): most have watermarks in an unobstrusive corner of the painting, because the more efficient the watermark the more it takes away from the drawing. If you fill out a reclamation at the hosting website they may take stolen art down but that involves you being aware it's been wrongfully used. Imo the point of signatures is more to allow people who want to, to find you or your other accounts (having the same username everywhere helps). Because this is the internet: your pictures will get around and get stripped of context: what you can do is embed context (your signature) into the picture so that people who don't care (99% of people) will carry it along without any extra effort. |
