Your prologue sets up a pretty fierce rivalry between pet dogs and forest dwellers, so much that it came to a battle. So if your main character was a pet, I'm guessing that not many forest dwellers would welcome him in to their world. The key to the story may not be your main character himself, but the other characters who choose to befriend him, in spite of social pressure to reject him.
