Here's a piece of something I've been working on for a while- Wind rustles trees outside as Hallum opens his eyes that morning, the sun shining onto his pelt. He lifts his head, confused. "What? Where am I?" he asks, standing. His small size makes the cavern feel large, when in fact it was ten meters tall and wide. "Hello?" he asks. No response. Where are my parents? … Who are my parents? "Hello? Anyone?" he shouts. Something feels off. He feels… Lost. "Over here! I told you I heard someone," someone says. Three wolves with silver pelts, with oddly black symbols painted on them, walk in. "A pup," one says, shaking his head. "But look," the original says, staring at Hallum with awe. "What? He's just…" All three stare at him, eyes wide. "Hello?" Hallum says. "Hello there, what are you doing here?" the original asks. "I don't know. I don't know where I am, or how I got here. Who are you?" Hallum asks. "We're members of the Black Pack," the third speaks, receiving glares from his companions. Hallum tilts his head. "The what?" he asks. "Never mind. How old are you?" the original asks. "Four," Hallum says. "What's your name?" "Hallum." The three wolves look at each other. "Where are you parents?" one asks. Hallum lowers his head. "I don't know." "What are their names? Perhaps-" "I don't know," Hallum says again, a tear falling. All three wolves look at each other again. "It's him. You know that. And we can't leave him here," one whispers. "Agreed." "But who will raise him?" "I'm the one who heard him. I'll raise him," the original wolf says. "You? He'll have no mother, you and your mate will just-" "He and I have wanted a pup for a while. And the Leader promised the next pup we find orphaned would be ours." The other two growl. To raise Hallum would be an honor among the Black Pack. "Will you fight me and disobey the Leader?" the original asks. They stop growling. "It's settled then. Hallum, would you like to come with us? We have a home, and food," he says. Hallum looks up, having not heard their conversation. "Don't worry. Our pack won't hurt you. In fact, we've been waiting for you for a while," the wolf says. "You have?" "Yes. We want to help you." Hallum stands. "Good boy," the wolf says, walking over and picking him up by the scruff. "Lucky," one wolf grumbles. "Stop it. There's no point. Gay brain has his pup, he won't let him go now," the other says. The original wolf growls at them, and they shrug. They leave, carrying Hallum, whose pelt seemed even blacker in the sunlight, with them. |
