Biography
LORE:
As Caerus and Tyche aged alongside each other, their bond strengthened and they were practically connected at the hip every moment he had away from Vallin and his teachings.
The two had come far from who they were as young pups, and it was hard for Caerus to believe he had once been a weak, whiny pup who struggled to keep up with his adoptive father. It was obvious he had become stronger physically, which was expected - even more so for adolescents, but the change in his personality was somewhat unbelievable. He acted with little thought for those around him, simply doing whatever he thought would push him further in Vallin's training, even if it meant stepping over or shoving past his packmates. The only exception to his behavior was Vallin himself, and Tyche, as they had an undeniable soft spot for each other. However, his behavior was about to take a much worse turn.
The day had started like any other, Caerus had risen early in the morning to begin training with Vallin, who was impatiently waiting for him. They sparred, then Vallin and him went over the range of the territory and taught Caerus about herbs as they traversed it, before eventually moving on to the best hunting techniques for each prey as they neared the pack's camp. Vallin dropped him off at the entrance, mumbling about how he had some business to attend to, so Vallin sought out Tyche's company until his return. Only once it had reached late evening with no sight of Vallin, did he begin to worry. Vallin was incredibly punctual, and they always had another training session in the afternoon, he should've returned hours ago. Caerus was quick to voice his worries to the current pack leader, Moon, though it was obvious to the adolescent she did not carry his level of concern, holding an ignorant amount of confidence in her packmates. She continued to assure him the male was fine, that he'd be back soon, and if he wasn't they'd send a search party for him out tomorrow.
Vallin never returned home that night and never would return alive. Moon had sent out a search party the next morning as promised, but all that was recovered was the corpse of Vallin, torn to shreds by some vicious bear, its distinctive paws and claws imprinted across his body. The sight broke something inside of Caerus, and he reacted to the death of his father in the only way he knew how to, with anger. He grieved silently for him that night alongside Tyche, who tried her best to comfort him, but her words could only soothe so much, and he was almost bursting with emotion and grief. In the upcoming months, he'd often leave the pack's camp in the early dawn and return in the late evening, barely speaking to Tyche during this time period. On the unfortunate days his routine was interrupted, he'd respond with anger and threats of violence until he was left alone to continue on his way. It took a long while, but Caerus eventually learned to regulate his emotions, becoming more somber and attentive, and it always helped to know Tyche was willing to stick with him through thick and thin.
Though time would always continue to flow, and they would flow along with it, aging into young adults in a wonderful early spring, new responsibilities coming with their new age. Moon was quick to assign Caerus to watch over the pups in the pack, trusting in his attentive senses to catch even the smallest details, as well as assigning Tyche alongside him as the two had already proven to be a strong duo, and the two were a perfect blend. Tyche, with her sweet and caring personality, was often the one to teach or soothe the pups who were under their care while Caerus stood nearby looking mean and listening for any signs of danger. Shortly after the two had been assigned their roles, Caerus asked Tyche to be his mate officially, and she accepted his proposal with glee, and Caerus once again had hope for his future, their future. The two were often seen together speaking in hushed whispers, and many newcomers in the pack who were unaware of their past often wondered how Tyche had been able to walk past his defenses and become as close as they were now.
However, it would not stay so peaceful forever. It had happened on a sunny afternoon, he and Tyche had taken out some of the pups for a brisk wall to get some fresh air when Caerus heard rustling in the bushes. He waited for a few moments, but the rustling never ceased, and he swiftly barked out orders for his mate to hurry back to camp with the pups, they were no longer safe here. He reassured her that he would be back soon, but wanted to secure their safety by making sure nothing could follow them straight to the heart of the back, and she nervously agreed before beckoning the pups onwards before vanishing from his line of sight. When Caerus was sure they had made good distance, he cautiously approached the direction the rustling had come from, only to be surprised by the snarling face of a bear. He fought back flashbacks of his father's corpse as he swallowed the growing lump in his throat, quickly moving into an aggressive stance and snapping his jaws in hopes of intimidating the bear, but it only seemed to further anger it as it moved forward to swipe a large paw at him which he barely dodged. This continued on for a few dreadfully long minutes, Caerus would lunge for any weak spots in range, struggling to get a good bite on it before it turned to swipe at him, missing by a few hairs every time. Unfortunately, despite the anger that fueled him forward, the bear was simply superior one-on-one, and eventually landed a painful blow on the wolf which left a nasty wound in it's wake. He lost his balance, almost collapsing into the dirt as he growled in pain of his new injury, but he refused to give up so easily. It took him a few minutes to recollect himself, but he was soon back to darting around the mighty beast, landing a fair amount of bites on it's mass before pulling away with a clump of bear fur he'd have to spit out. This strategy may have worked if he wasn't already so tired, if he had a group, maybe even if the bear was already wounded, but none of that was the case. He was going against this beast alone, and he was already so tired with his injury sucking the life out of him. Caerus had slowed down, and it seemed the bear had realized it's target was loosing, and how victory was inches away from its nasty claws. He was taken by surprised as it charged him, taking the offensive instead of play defense and reacting to his movements, and he simply couldn't move out of the way fast enough. Caerus let out a cry of pain as the beast crashed into him, flinging his body to ground and knocking the air out of his lungs. The bear stared down at him for a few moments, letting out a huff before swiping its heavy claws down his body before turning away to leave the wolf to die slowly.
Caerus had never felt true agony like this ever in his life, sure - losing Vallin was incredibly painful, but the pain of practically being torn apart - realizing that you may very well just bleed out in the soil, leaving everything behind as your world faded to nothing and you entered eternal slumber. He wondered if this is what Vallin felt that day as his vision began spotting with small black dots, and he let out a small whine before letting the darkness overtake him.
To say Caerus was shocked to wake up alive and well, as well as one could be in this situation anyways, and in some sort of human facility would be an understatement. He was flabbergasted, especially as one of the humans, who was dressed in an oddly long and white article of cloth, calmly walked into his enclosure before realizing its subject was alive and conscious. He gave a snap of his jaws and snarled, and the human responded by raising its arms and continuing its approach, though at a much slower pace. Caerus, who was far too tired and sore to put up a real fight, allowed the human to approach but kept his wary gaze on them as they drew closer and closer before eventually reaching him. They moved their hand around his body a few times, grabbed a few things from their white cloth, and put them up across his body before taking them away a few moments later and eventually walked away with a smooth piece of wood and what looked to be a sharp stick. He gave a look over his body, making sure nothing had been disturbed too much, before letting a huff of annoyance and laying his head back down to fall back into a deep slumber after being hit by a sudden wave of drowsiness. He could think about escaping and getting back to Tyche when he didn't feel like he just got crushed by a boulder.
Caerus was flabbergasted when he woke up in some human-made enclosure, but nothing could explain the sheer surprise of when he had woken up strapped down to some sort of elevated floor while being surrounded by humans looking down at him. They seemed to be speaking amongst themselves in hushed tones, and he let out a flurry of barks and growls as he struggled against his confinement to no avail. His outburst did seem to get their attention though, and they shared a few more hushed words with each other before one eventually approached him with slow steps. He tried to turn and snap his jaws at them, but all he really could do was wiggle and writhe while they stayed in his blind spots. This continued for some time before Caerus eventually felt a small prick against his skin, and he almost let out a bark of laughter of their weakness before suddenly being overtaken by a wave of pain, agony even. It hadn't been terrible at first, just a wave of pain he would be able to walk off, but it just continued to grow to the point it felt like every hair on his pelt had been tugged on and pulled out. He cried out in pain, struggling against his restraints harder than before, and they eventually buckled and released him. This development had been unexpected by the humans, and they all seemed to take a step away from his with a noise of surprise or shock, but he could not afford to lose any precious time.
Caerus lunged for the nearest body, delivering a fatal blow before turning to his next target and striking, again and again and again, until there was nothing left but him and the corpses splayed across the now bloodied floor. He didn't have time to sit around, so he quickly pushed through what he assumed was some sort of entrance, wandering through the small building for what felt like days before eventually getting the lucky exit and running back out into the wild. He'd like to think he was overjoyed at his escape, but he was confused and lost. What had they done to him, and why had it pained him so? He could only make assumptions as adrenaline pumped through his veins, leading him in a random direction, it didn't matter where he ended up right now, he just needed to be as far as possible from that building, from his massacre. It had taken him a while, some odd amount of hours if he had to guess until he reached a stream. Vallin would often take him here when he was younger, and the two liked to watch for any fish passing through, but this time was different, and not only because Vallin had long been dead. Caerus himself had changed, he knew that, but his physical appearance had changed so much that he almost refused to believe the wolf staring back at him in the water's reflection was him. His coat was no long a mixture of whites, creams, and browns. It was a pure white, with pink tints taking over his nose, paw pads, and around his eyes. Was he now an albino? He shuddered at the thought, this must've been the result of the pain, why it felt like his coat was being torn away because it was. It was torn from him, and replaced with whatever this was. Caerus snarled at his reflection, angrily slamming his paw through the water to fizzle it before taking a few heavy steps forward and breaking into a sprint. He had to find Tyche, he couldn't face all of this alone right now.
Luckily for Caerus, fate had laid out everything needed for him to get back to Tyche, and back to his pack. He stumbled upon his territory early in the morning and quickly moved towards the heart of it, where his pack resided, and made his way into their camp only to be met with surprised and hostile eyes. A strike of confusion almost made it across his face, but how could he expect them to realize who he was with his new appearance? Caerus took a deep breath, rotating his head to scan the gathering crowd that seemed to be growing more confident and aggressive. He began to explain who he was and what had happened, and the crowd's aggression was replaced with doubtful murmurs and wide-eyed stares before they began calling out questions in a flurry, though they had quickly ceased once a certain she-wolf broke through the crowd and dashed up to Caerus, almost crashing into him before she began nuzzling into his mass. He slumped in relief at the realization of it being Tyche and returned her affections. Their contact lasted for a few more moments before being broken by the female, who turned towards the now shocked silent pack. She vouched for him, saying that despite his new appearance, this was the wolf she had grown up with, who she had fallen in love with all those seasons ago, and who was going to argue with her? It wasn't exactly credible or intelligent to claim she was wrong about who her mate and long-time friend was. So, one by one, they had all broken into a howl of celebration, happy to have their missing packmate home and alive.
Though with this good news, the bad news was quick to follow. After everyone had given Caerus his warm welcome, Tyche took the time to catch him up on what had happened in his absence. Thankfully, she and the pups had returned safely, but Moon had died shortly after his disappearance with no heirs left behind. He was surprised by this information, as he assumed she would've arranged an heir in her older years, but he guessed she was always known to be a bit overconfident in herself and those around her. A few moments passed as Caerus silently soaked in the information before Tyche hesitantly suggested him as a new leader, going on to explain that the pack had discussed possible candidates to take over, and pretty much everyone had agreed he'd be a good fit with his intelligence and bravery. He stared at his mate with an unreadable expression, contemplating it for what seemed like eternity to Tyche before he eventually nodded, which she responded to with a overjoyed bark and a quick nuzzle before dashing over to the still gathered pack with the good news. He stared after her before releasing a short huff and following after her, his packmates eyes now glued to him. They all had the same question written across their face, had he really accept the role of leader?
All Caerus had to do was respond with a short nod before being crowded by them and his ears flooded with howls and barks of joy. They had a new leader, one they trusted to protect them from all and any dangers that dare threaten them.
