Biography
Seeking something of interest, Qimmiit arrived at a bustling trading center. While some wolves there caught his fleeting attention, none could hold it for long. Lost in his thoughts, he suddenly felt a bump on his side, causing him to rise with hackles raised, ready to growl at the perpetrator. To his surprise, he found himself face to face with a wolf adorned with feathers—an unusual sight indeed. Intrigued by this unique individual, Qimmiit couldn't help but wonder about the story behind the feathered wolf's transformation. The wolf, whom he would come to know as Anjanath, invited him to his territory for the evening.
As Qimmiit accompanied Anjanath, he found himself simultaneously dissecting his surroundings and strangely enjoying the journey. He stayed with Anjanath's pack for a while, and while nothing seemed to change, there was an unfamiliar sense of contentment within him. However, it wasn't until he laid eyes on Nanurjuk that his heart truly stirred. She was the embodiment of perfection in his eyes, and despite his inner struggles and passive facade, he yearned to interact with her.
Days turned into weeks, and Qimmiit expected Nanurjuk to come to him, seeking his attention. But she didn't. Realizing that he needed to make an effort if he wanted perfection in his life, he decided to try harder. He became a constant presence by her side, poking at her, vying for her attention. It was during this time that the pack bestowed upon him the nickname "Qimmiit," derived from a legend Nanurjuk had shared from her puphood. In the legend, Nanurjuk was chased by hunting dogs, and they ran all the way to the edge of the world, plunging into the starry sky. Qimmiit, the persistent pursuer, embodied that essence.
Qimmiit's transformation did not go unnoticed. The formerly disinterested pack member, now desperately seeking Nanurjuk's attention, had changed the dynamics of their interactions. Their friendship, if it could be called that, began to take shape. They became inseparable, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. Qimmiit, for the first time in his life, was willing to wait patiently for Nanurjuk to be ready to commit herself to him, and for him to commit himself to her.
And so, he waited. He waited for the day when Nanurjuk would be ready to embrace a future together, where their hearts would intertwine, bound by a love forged through persistence and transformation. Qimmiit had learned that sometimes, the greatest joys in life required patience and the willingness to change oneself for the better.
Nanurjuk's Legends
In Inuit myth, Rigel is included in the myth of Qimmiit, "the dogs", which explains how Orion's belt was formed. Four hunters and their dogs came across a bear and chased it into the sky. Three of them became the stars in Orion's Belt (Ullaktut). One of them, who had dropped his mitt, fell behind and became the star Rigel, which is lower than the Belt in the sky. (In other versions he returned to earth.) Their dogs became the Hyades, Qimmiit.
In one legend, Qimmiit (the star cluster of Hyades) are dogs who have cornered a polar bear, Nanurjuk (Aldebaran). Used to keep time throughout the night. Each pair of stars denotes a bone each of the collar bone. In legends, referred to as "a large man who went hunting".
In one legend, Nanook was chased by hunting dogs. Hunt went on and on and Nanook was not able to shake it´s pursuers off. They ran all the way to the edge of the world. In the joy of the hunt Nanook and the dogs did not notice the cliff. They all plunged into the star sky. This is how the constellation of Pleiades was born.
