Beam had always been there for Elk, from the day she was born, to the day she became lead. Beam is always ready to advise and help his friend in anyway he can, and he knows Elk will do the same for him. What are cousins for after all.
History
Jet chose his heir the day before the pups officially became adolescents. Elk was shocked when she got picked. She had always thought her brother would become lead, he was more outgoing and confident than her. Still, if Jet thought she should be leader, then she would do her best. Elk took her training seriously, though her scatterbrained and clumsy nature did make things difficult at times.
Elk still had a lot to learn by the time she reached adulthood, but she had the promise of a very noble and respected leader. She still wasn't sure she was ready, but there was no more time left to worry now. Jet was old and it was his time to pass on and join their ancestors.
On the 8th year of his life, Steel and Elk accompanied Jet to the mountains summit. Once at the top, Jet passed on the role of lead to Elk. Looking at the endless sky, all of Jets long gone friends came to guide him to the afterlife, and with that, Elk was officially the pack's lead.
Elk's first job as lead, was to apprentice Aurora and Finch. Both pups chose the role of chasers. Both wolves seemed to enjoy the job well enough, Aurora more than Finch. It certainly took Finch a while to adjust to being a chaser, which was something Elk related to and found sympathy in.
Silver and Speck were the first deaths Elk witnessed as lead. The two brothers being guided up the mountain summit by Steel as their parents gently guided them into the afterlife. Charcoal decided to take over as the packs mentor. Things weren't all bad however, as around this time Brass gave birth to two girls, Marigold, and Grackle. Not long after Aurora and Finch reached adulthood and officially became chasers for the pack.
Fire, Ash, and Charcoal were the next to pass. Steel guiding the three brothers to the mountains summit, where they were guided to the afterlife by their parents. Elk did her best to comfort her mother during this time, losing a parent must be tough. Lapis agreed to take over as mentor for the pack. Marigold and Grackle became adolescents around this time, starting their training as trackers and chasers respectively. The two sisters showed great skill in their new roles.
While out on patrol, Elk had run into a lone wolf. Racoon showed himself to be a kind and caring wolf, and when he asked to join the pack Elk welcomed him with open paws. Racoon chose the role of pupsitter and adapted to the packs live very quickly. Good thing he chose this role too, as around this time Rust and Patch gave birth to a litter of four pups, Emu, Platypus, Dingo, and Snake.
Lapis was the nest loss for the pack, she was getting older, and her time had come. Guided by Steel, she climbed the mountain's summit, where her mate guided her to the afterlife. Rose took over as mentor, but not for long. She herself was getting old and climbed the mountain not long after. Her parents guided her to the afterlife, with Sun taking on her role as mentor.
Marigold and Grackle made for great hunters, and by the time they reached adulthood, they both showed great skill in their respected jobs. Not long after, Patch's pups reached adolescence, Dingo choosing the role of a finisher, while Emu, Platypus and Snake became chasers.
The next loss for the pack was a large one. Guided by Steel, Sun, Swan, Caramel, and Sand climbed the mountains summit, where the four siblings were guided into the afterlife by their parents. Shore chose to take over as mentor.
Elk was never sure of love; she found her heart often pulled her towards multiple wolves and that terrified her. That was, until Badger confessed to her. She had always liked Badger and when he confessed his own feelings, she believed she would be happy to be with just him for the rest of her life. But then she met Finch… She expected Badger to hate her when she admitted she had feelings for both him and Finch but, Badger seemed more than understanding. He said if she liked both, why did she just take them both as mates? She was more than nervous but, when she confessed to Finch and brought up this idea, Finch seemed more than eager.
Elk had always wanted pups, and she was happy when both Finch and Badger shared this sentiment. She ended up having a litter of three with Finch, two girls and one boy named Moss, Beaver, and Caribou. Elk adored her pups, and promised to protect and care for them as best she could.
Frostbite was the second pup Winterberry and Taiga adopted. Boss and loud, Elk knew he would fit right in. Around this time Emu, Platypus, Snake and Dingo became adults. All four had done amazing in their training and had become skilled hunters.
It didn't take long for Frostbite to reach adolescence, choosing to train as a chaser. Around this time, Aurora and Racoon decided to have a litter of their own. Blessing the pack with one girl and three boys, Australis, Moldavite, Maffei, and Callisto.
Elk was shocked by how quickly her pups grew, already having reached adolescence. Caribou chose to train as the pack healer, while Beaver and Moss chose the role of chasers. Things weren't all perfect, as a few days later both Clay and Coral climbed the mountains summit, being guided by their mates to the afterlife. Shore kindly chose to take over as the packs mentor.
Frostbite became an adult only a few days before Elks own pups. Frostbite, Beaver, and Moss had all become great hunters and Caribou was showing herself to be a skilled herbalist. Sadly, around this time Shore made his way to the mountains summit, being guided by his mate to the afterlife. Elk's mother, Cacao, took on the role of mentor.
Time seemed to flash by. Aurora's pups reaching adolescence. Moldavite, Callisto, and Australis training as pupsitters, with Maffei training as a tracker. It felt like it had only been moment when they then reached adulthood, all becoming very skilled in their chosen roles.
Elk had no choice but to help when she saw a lone wolf trapped in a poacher's snare. To leave him would be cruel. Obviously, she offered him to stay with her pack while his leg healed. She learnt that his name was Magma, that he had been travelling alone for a while. Once Magma had been in the base for a few days, it became obvious that this was his new home, Elk insisting he lived there permanently. Magma was more than eager, taking on the role of pupsitter. Elk noted it didn't take him long after this to obviously fall for Dingo, eventually asking her to be his mate.
The death of Elk's parents was one of the worse days in her pack's history. Not only did she lose two, amazing, loving parents. But the pack lost more wolves than they ever had in such a short period of time. Cacao, Steel, Obsidian, Brass, Alder, Ox, Duck, and Topaz all made their way to the mountains summit, being guided by their families to the afterlife. Elk was a wreck and was grateful when Eagle began to assist her in her duties, comforting her all the while. Duck had briefly been mentor, before she passed herself. Rust taking on the role afterwards.
With death, however, comes life. Marigold had wanted pups for a while and ended up having four. Three girls and one boy, Void, Swamp, Seashell, and Russet. Not long after, Elk met a kind wolf named Bermuda. She had been travelling on her own for a while and now felt like settling down in a pack, Elk happily offered her a place in The Pack of Souring Summit. Bermuda fit in right away, becoming a pupsitter and showing an obvious interest in Australis. Elk can't say she was surprised when the two officially became mates.
Marigold's pups seemed to grow so fast, already reaching adolescence. All four pups became hunters, Seashell became a tracker, Swamp a finisher, and Void and Russet became chasers. Seeing Marigold's pups grow made Elk think of her own life. She would like to have one more litter of pups before she is too old to. After discussing it with her mates, they decided if they were going to do that, it was best to do it now. Elk found herself rather surprised as she looked down at her six new puppies. Five girls and one boy, Heron, Courser, Lichen, Bison, Honey, and Agate… Boy did Elk have her work cut out for her, at least she had her mates to help.
Elk had at first thought Avalanche was Smokes pup when she first met them. It turned out that Avalanche had gotten lost, and Smoke was trying to help the poor pup find his way. It quickly became obvious that there was no chance they would ever find the pup's original pack. He was too turned around. Elk kindly offered the scared pup a place in her pack, the pup timidly agreeing. Smoke travelled along with them, stating he would stay just for a while, to help look after Avalanche. In the end, Smoke became attached to the pack… and to Moldavite. Smoke chose to stay as a pupsitter, and not long after awkwardly confessed to Moldavite, to which the wolf accepted. Avalanche himself didn't take long to get accustomed, in no time at all he reached adolescence and began his training as a pupsitter.
Russet, Seashell, Void, and Swamp breezed through their training. By the time they reached adulthood, they had shown themselves to be greatly skilled hunters, a real contribution to the pack. Not long after, Elk's own pups became adolescents. Elk had been right about her pups being pawfuls, Bison, Lichen, and Agate had established an intense rivalry from a young age, all of them were adamant about choosing different types of hunting roles, wanting to one up the other. Bison chose the role of chaser, Lichen the role of tracker, and Agate the role of finisher. Thankfully, Elk's other pups were calmer, Heron chose the role of a scout, being mentored by her father. While Honey and Courser chose the role of pupsitters.
Rust was the next wolf to die, making their way to the mountains summit where their dear friend Topaz guided them to the afterlife. Beam chose to take over as mentor, though not for long as a month later him and his littermates also passed. Gem, Beam, and Taiga making their way to the mountains summit where they were greeted by their parents Rose and Coral, who guided them to the afterlife. This time, Orange took over as mentor.
Wren was the last wolf Elk would see join her pack. Wren had shown up in the pack's base one day, stating she had heard stories of Elk's pack and insisting she would make a perfect member of the pack. Impressed by the wolf's confidence, Elk agreed the wolf could join with Wren taking on the role of finisher. Elk noted that Snake and Wren began to spend a lot of time together, she can't say she was too surprised when the two announced they were officially mates.
Avalanche was now an adult and had shown himself to be an amazing pupsitter. Elk was so happy with how well Avalanche had integrated into the pack. Not long after, Elks own pups became adults. Still and competitive as ever, Bison, Lichen and Agate had proven themselves to be skilled hunters. Courser and Honey had become skilled pupsitters, and Honey seemed to enjoy the role a lot more than she had when she first began her training. Heron adored her job as Scout and Elk felt confident the role was made for her daughter.
Patch, Cloud, Orange, and Winterberry were getting old and knew their time had come. The four siblings climbed the mountains summit where their parents, Clay and Sand guided them to the afterlife. Eagle chose to become the new mentor of the pack.
Elk was both excited and nervous that she lived long enough to meet her grandpups. Excited to meet them, but nervous as she knew she would need to pick one of these pups to take her place as leader. Her eldest, Caribou, gave birth to two boys and a girl, Beast, Fern, and Peacock. While Heron and Avalanche gave birth to two girls and two boys, Sparrow, Beach, Turquoise, and Marble. Elk knew that she would have to watch these pups' development diligently, she needed to make sure she chose the correct pup to lead the pack.
The seven pups continued to grow, Elk watching them closely. All of the pups had various pros and cons, but in the end, Elk knew in her heart that Fern was the correct wolf for the job. They were dedicated to their pack, patient and analytical, and most importantly, they had shown an interest in the job. While the other pups were indeed disappointed, they were not picked, it didn't take long for them to pick other roles to train as. Beast chose the role of scout, the next best thing in his mind, Elk was confident he would do a good job, especially when the pup went missing for a few days, returning with a pair of large, powerful horns. No wolf would invade their territory with Beast guarding it. Beach, a timid pup, chose the role of pupsitter, while Peacock, Marble, Turquoise, and Sparrow all chose various roles as hunters. Turquoise, Marble, and Sparrow choosing to be chasers, and Peacock choosing to be a tracker.
Elk had never truly considered that being lead meant she would live longer than her brother and yet, here she was. Her brother came to her, admitting he knew his time had come. Elk was heartbroken and insisted on joining him for his walk up the mountain. Once at the top, Eagle was guided to the afterlife by his parents, Topaz, and Cacao. Losing a sibling was a feeling Elk wasn't sure how to handle, she had always been so close with her brother, she couldn't bare for him to be gone. Sadly, she had no choice but to pick herself up. She was getting old herself and there was a lot she needed to do before then, training her heir Fern being one of the most important things. She would see her brother again soon.
Elk was surprised when she met the timid Moonlight. The wolf was only young and extremely skittish, Elk was shocked the young wolf had survived on her own for as long as she had. Elk knew this wolf deserved a proper home and offered for her to join her pack. Moonlight timidly accepting, taking on the role of mentor.
Loosing one of her mates was hard on Elk. Badger was getting older, and he knew it was time to make his journey up to the mountains summit. Once at the top, Badger was guided to the afterlife by his dear friend, Patch. Elk wasn't sure how to feel about Badgers death, she found comfort in the fact she would be joining him in only a few months, but also felt great pain for her other mate Finch, who would be left all alone. Now without a mentor for the pack, Aurora chose to take on the job.
Elk knew that her grandpups were the last wolves she would see reach adulthood. Beach was a devoted pupsitter and Beast had shown himself to be a greatly skilled scout. Peacock was an amazing tracker, and Turquoise, Marble, and Sparrow had great promise as chasers. While they still had plenty to learn, Elk knew that Fern would take after the pack as leader once she was gone.
On the 8th year of her life, Caribou and Fern accompanied Elk to the mountains summit. Once at the top, Elk passed on the role of lead to Fern. Looking at the endless sky, all of Elk's long-gone friends came to guide her to the afterlife.
