Silverfang was a keen little boy who made everything look easy. He won every game at playtime and stayed quiet at storytime and bedtime. He was well-behaved and respectful with his elders and playful but gentle with his sisters. He was admired by the other pups and praised by his elders. So much so that his pupsitter Bearswipe was concerned that he might become arrogant. Bear paid close attention to Silver, looking for signs of negative effects, and quickly addressed them when he saw them. Silver didn't understand what the extra focus was all about, but any attention was valuable in a nursery full of seven pups, so he didn't question it. He just enjoyed it.
At the Academy, Silver was assigned to study strength and wisdom to improve his weakest stats. He was a good student, maybe a little too sociable in class, but that wasn't unusual. The few scoldings he got kept him on the right path behavior-wise. But Silver noticed the attention he'd received as a pup fading. Other pups excelled in school more than he did and winning a game of Tag didn't have the same prestige as it had before. Silver felt ignored and left out, even though the other pups still looked up to him somewhat. He wondered what he could do to stay in the spotlight. He asked his mother and she told him to just keep working hard at his lessons and the answer would come. When the pupsitters recommended him for a hunter role, Peach was overjoyed. She was sure that would be a great place for Silver and she told him so.
During his apprenticeship, Silver went out on the hunting trail to train as a stalker. His mentor Foxtrick enjoyed her work and taught Silver to enjoy it too. It was fun to find ways of outsmarting the prey and guiding the team to where they needed to be. Silver liked the sense of power and danger he got from this work and it didn't seem to matter so much anymore if he got personal attention or not. He felt just as good when the team as a whole was recognized for their hard work. He still liked being praised individually, as anyone would, but it began to matter more to him that the pack succeeded then he himself did. Silver realized that leaving behind the glory-loving puppy he had been for the sake of the pack's advancement was the right way to go.
On his first birthday, Silver could not have been prouder of himself and his sisters. He even gave a toast, congratulating them all for their hard work and for surviving puppyhood in the Taiga forest. That got a big laugh, especially from Goldensong.
Now as an adult, Silver doesn't do anything special to earn glory for himself, but he gets it all the same. As a hunter, his work spoke for itself and the Academy students were fed almost entirely on small prey that Silver caught hunting by himself. He earned much admiration for his efforts and it didn't surprise anyone when Alpha Fogfrost chose him as his heir. As Alpha, when he speaks, everyone listens. But he still works very hard every day to make sure everyone is taken care of, and equally hard to keep himself from getting a big head. His Beta Greyspirit is good at reminding him to be humble and he's grateful for her support every day. The heavy weight of an Alpha's responsibility has pushed Silver closer to the Ancestors and he prays for the guidance of past Alphas often. He believes that the Pack's continued prosperity is partly due to his prayers, but his packmates are quick to point out that his good leadership plays a bigger role.
