Ashen Pelt (Ashen) received her name from the disaster that befell her previous pack; a fire swept through the camp and surrounding meadows while she was exploring with another young wolf. They were forced to run from the flames, and the other surviving pack members scattered. She lost her companion, Flutter, when the other wolf made a loud noise and caused a nearby herd of buffalo to stampede. Flutter knocked her out of the path of the herd, but then was swept away herself. Unable to find her after the herd passed, Ashen fled and found shelter in the deciduous forest, remaining careful to pad silently. She gathered a group of like-minded wolves, and began calling herself Ashen, since ashes remain after a fire. Her previous name has been lost to time. Ashen is accompanied by butterflies in memory of Flutter.

During the turbulent period at the start of Ashen's reign, she was under a lot of pressure. Wanting her pups to be prepared to handle the same when they were of age, she pushed them to be the best they could. Ember, the firstborn, was frustrated by her mother's expectations and found ways to quietly escape the limelight. On the other paw, Tawny couldn't handle being second place in everything he did. He left with his father, Tansy, when Ashen snapped at him for not taking his training seriously. Heartbroken, she turned to a newcomer, Chrysalis, for comfort.

One day, Ashen encountered a beautiful blue and purpleish wolf while exploring. He introduced himself as Chrysalis, due to the butterfly-like patterns on his fur. In many ways, he acted similarly to Ashen's lost companion Flutter, with his fantastical stories and thoughtful expression. Flustered, she invited him to join her pack, and he eagerly accepted, likewise intrigued by her. Ashen kept her distance at first, fearful that he would be torn away from her like Flutter had been. She was also unsure of how her pups would respond to her taking a mate. As time went on, Chrysalis proved himself to be a strong hunter and pack member.
He was steadfast when Ashen came to him after Tansy left, becoming a close advisor. He started bringing her creative gifts, and regaled her with tales of his old pack. Eventually, Ashen allowed herself to care for him, and they became mates.

Upon Ashen's death, there were a few options for leader. Ember quickly ceded the position to her younger brother Thistle. But maybe one day her descendants will find they have a taste for power...
