The Adoption
Fernstar stood in front of the great bear, Lillemor. The grizzly had been blessed by The Pack of Endless Hunting to understand their language and their needs, as well as to predict the future of the packs. She also acted as guardian for the lost pups of packs before.
"We need strong young wolves for the pack," Fernstar said quietly. "Our pack is small and the threat of both coyotes and cougars is at large."
Lillemor nodded in understanding. "I need two wolves. Two mates," she specified. "They can then adopt a single puppy from the grove."
Fernstar beckoned Bonebriar and Nightwhisker forward with a flick of her ears. "They are willing and eager parents."
"Good," the bear said firmly. "I will bring out a puppy that meets your needs." The grizzly bear got to her paws and disappeared inside a cave. After several moments, she returned with a golden pup dangling from her mouth. She placed the pup down in front of her. "She's strong and wise even at such a young age and she'll make a fitting wolf for your pack."
Bonebriar held back as Nightwhisker rushed to sniff the puppy down. "She's perfect," the black she-wolf breathed. "What's her name?"
"Honeypup," Bonebriar said instantly.
Lillemor nodded. "It's a fitting name."
Nightwhisker smiled, her tongue lolling out of her mouth. "I love it. I love her."
Bonebriar picked her up by the scruff.
"You're going to love our home, Honeypup," Nightwhisker said, walking beside Bonebriar eagerly.
"You're going to have your paws full with that one," Lillemor said to Fernstar. "Good luck keeping that little explorer home."
"But we need wolves to defend our home, not leave it!"
"Sometimes, looking beyond is the only way to answer the problems within," she said.
"What does that mean?" Fernstar asked desperately.
The bear shrugged. "We'll see in time, I suppose."

Honeypaw shrieked in delight as she raced across the icy ground. This was the best day of her life. Sure, the tour of the territory had been nice. Hunting was cool. And battle training was incredibly fun. But this, this was something else.
"Honeypaw," Thistletail, her mentor, called.
Honeywisp barely heard her. She slowed down and turned back to the small form of a wolf in the distance. "Oops," she muttered under her breath. Thistletail had never had much patience with her and she always found something wrong with her. Thistletail was barely older than her but had the same urges to explore the boundaries beyond their territory which made Fernstar decide to pair the two together. She raced back toward her mentor, her paws slipping on the icy surface.
"How many times do I have to tell you that this is an unfamiliar place?" The black she-wolf growled at the ginger apprentice. "There are enemies that we've never heard of lurking about. And this slick ice would make it easy to dislocate a shoulder and we're a long way from home."
Honeypaw shrugged. "I know, I know. But why can't we have any fun?"
"Stay close to me," Thistletail growled. "Don't make me tell you again."
Honeypaw wasn't dejected by Thistletail's less-than-cheerful response and hopped along beside her mentor.
"You never run out of energy, do you?" Thistletail said with a sigh.
"Nope!"
"This is going to be a long apprenticeship," the black she-wolf groaned.
Honeypaw laughed. If this is what it means to be an apprentice, I hope I never grow up.

Honeypaw's Warrior Ceremony
"Let all wolves old enough to catch their own prey, join me here by the fallen birch for a pack meeting!" Fernstar called.
Honeypaw jumped around her parents excitedly. "I'm becoming a warrior!" she boasted. She wasn't a hundred percent sure that was the reason for the summons, but honestly what else could it be?
"Settle down," Nightwhisker scolded amusedly. "You're acting like a pup."
"Let her be," Bonebriar said. "You only become a warrior once."
"Honeypaw," Fernstar said. "Step forward."
Honeypaw practically skipped into the semi-circle gathered around the fallen tree. She heard an exasperated sigh come from her mother and she giggled as she imagined her mother's expression.
Fernstar turned and looked at Thistletail. "Thistletail, has your apprentice learned the skills of a warrior?"
Thistletail nodded once. "She has," she answered. "Though she could learn the art of some patience."
Fernstar's green eyes glittered with amusement as she leaped down from the log. "Then I, Fernstar, leader of The Pack of the Shadowed River, call upon our ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has worked hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Honeypaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this pack with your life?"
Honeypaw had to force herself to stand still. Her paws itching to move. What would her new name be? I hope it's not something dumb. Oops. Fernstar was talking. "I do," she said firmly, though she hadn't really heard her leader. But she had watched enough ceremonies to know what the question was.
"Then by the power of our ancestors, I give you your warrior name. Honeypaw, from this moment on you will be known as Honeywisp. We honor your enthusiasm and energy, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Shadowed River," Fernstar finished. The leader stepped forward and rested her muzzle on Honeywisp's head and Honeywisp licked Fernstar's shoulder in turn.
As the pack called her by her new name, she flew to her parents who covered her in affectionate licks.
"I'm so proud of you," Bonebriar said.
