Dawnlake was a dedicated little boy who looked forward to a life devoted to Honeywood Pack. He wasn't sure exactly what he wanted to do, but he knew he was going to love it and couldn't wait to get started. He wanted to learn everything about the Pack's life, asking for more stories and explanations of everything. It wasn't unusual to have a story interrupted by Dawn shouting "But what does that mean?!" Pups had always played little pretend games, but Dawn managed to orchestrate a big game he called "Pretend Pack" with every pup playing a part. The "hunters" would pounce on carcasses, barking excitedly. The "scouts" would run around the outside of the dens collecting sticks. The "pupsitters" would scold and fuss over toys. The "herbalist" would collect and organize leaves while the "alpha" bossed everyone around. The real pupsitters didn't really like this game because it always brought chaos. But the pups loved it so.
At the Academy, Dawn studied speed and agility to build on his strengths. And he absorbed everything his teachers presented to him with great enthusiasm. He often followed them back to the Grand Den after class, peppering them with questions, until they slipped inside. Pups are never allowed in the Grand Den unsupervised, but Dawn was caught sneaking in more than once. His pupsitter Moondream had to keep an extra close eye on him. Dawn's dedication to his education earned him the right to choose his last lesson and no one was surprised when he chose Working Together. It seemed like just a more directed form of "Pretend Pack".
During his apprenticeship, it was time for Dawn to put his learning into practice as a young chaser on the hunting trail. He was eager and energetic in the chase, but his frequent questions often annoyed his elders. Many of the things he wanted to know could not easily be explained in words and could only be effectively taught by experience. Being told that was frustrating for Dawn and the truth of it was slow to sink in. But as his apprenticeship wore on, he came to realize that his questions were being answered, albeit slower than he liked, and he realized that the adults were right. All he had to do was keep on working and doing his part and the knowledge would come.
On his first birthday, Dawn took the opportunity for one more night to act like a puppy. He laughed and sang with his siblings and the other youngsters. After a few drinks, he even proposed one more round of "Pretend Pack". But the others begged off. They didn't need to pretend anymore.
Now as an adult, Dawn knows everything he wanted to know about pack life as a pup. But sometimes, it's still not enough. If there's a curious question being asked, he's the one asking it. Sometimes it seems his curiosity knows no bounds. On the hunting trail, Dawn is a hard worker and a good teammate. Never at a loss for what to do next, even when prey leads the hunters into difficult terrain. Experience is indeed the best teacher and Dawn tries to tell the Academy students that when he gets a chance. He also likes to teach them to play "Pretend Pack" and laugh at their antics. He may end up laughing all over again after a few drinks with his packmates later in the night.
