Grousewing was a keen little girl who wanted to grow up as fast as she could. Never satisfied, she always wanted to do more. Run faster, jump higher, learn to swim. But it seemed like no matter how hard she tried, her brother Brownleaf always managed to accomplish first. And it felt like her sister Streampelt got more attention from mom because she was the runt. Grouse didn't hate her siblings, but she was jealous of them and did everything she could to show that she was great too.
At the Academy, Grouse studied smarts and wisdom with her siblings to build on their strengths. Grouse went at her lessons very hard and earned top marks from all her teachers. They praised her efforts and her mom was proud. But best of all, she had caught up with Brown and could do everything he could do. But Grouse was still never satisfied and longed for new challenges.
During her apprenticeship, Grouse learned stalking work from her mom on the hunting trail. Grouse loved the excitement and challenge of the hunt and flourished in her training. She felt like a star but continued to work hard as always. She was the first to ask for more responsibility on the trail and the first to scent out and successfully track large prey. Her jealousy towards her siblings melted away and she felt truly happy.
On her first birthday, Grouse shared a drink with Brown and all the other young wolves in the pack. She had worked so hard to get here and she deserved this celebration. There was more work to come, but it was nice to take a moment to look back at everything she had achieved so far.
Now as an adult, no one knows the value of hard work better than Grouse. If she overhears a pup complain about their difficult lessons at the Academy, she'll launch into a long lecture about how meeting and overcoming challenges builds character. Some of her packmates say that she talks like an elder, but Grouse knows that she's just speaking from experience. At work, Grouse has the magic nose and the work ethic to find a trail no matter what. Her teammates joke that she could "find a hare in a hailstorm". She can give good account of herself at a round of fermented barley, but never overdoes it. Nothing messes up a day of work like a hangover.
