When The senior scout passed, it was between Duneif and Grip. The later was younger, so while Duneif did have the seniority to fill the role first, they had also just had a litter. It was a hard decision, but in the end Mephus passed the role to Grip to give Duneif time to recover. Being out in the cold, open air was refreshing compared to the confines of the wooded mountains, but it was strange. Grip remained determined in their duties, bringing back as much information on the surrounding area as they could, especially after the Coigreach just ending. The young wolf had trained in a rough season for this, and found it more than manageable. Yet something remained in them unfulfilled. Being free to roam was a blessing, but also entailed an aching loneliness. The previous scouts had not eluded to this, but Grip found himself in the grips of a cold that would not let go. They turned at night, fitfully catching sleep under a canopy of countless stars. They kept a distant eye on neighboring packs, wolves crawling like ants in the distance, returning to dens of their kin. It began to eat at him. Soon, he found himself seeing his own pack in the same way he saw any other, just wolves he recognized, crawling around the land, huddled with their own.
