Kodak, born in the hot, beating heatwaves of summer was sworn to achieve greatness and glory. The gods above put their hopes and powers into this singular pup— a prophecy. A prophecy given at birth that was written in the stars.
~~
That summer was unbearable for the pack, Kodak's mother had almost fainted going through with the delivery. Luckily with the help of their herbalist, she was able to successfully deliver three beautiful pups, but only one survived. The lone survivor was Kodak—named after the great and terrific Kodak Grizzly bear, his name honoring and granting him the strength, ferocity and power to fulfill his role in pack life.
~~
Only at few months old, Kodak fell into a vegetative coma-like state after contracting a mystery virus. The packs' herbalist had no idea what the virus was, as the pup wasn't showing symptoms prior to his collapse. Once collapsed and seemingly unresponsive, he was moved to a secluded bush—away from the rest of the pack but still close enough to monitor.
While in the unconscious state, Kodak had bizarre dreams. Dreams that consisted of silver outlines of wolves whose eyes shone with great intensity, stationed in a place called 'The Dreamlands'. They stared and whispered to him but Kodak was unable to properly understand them. Being scared and concerned on where he was, the young pup stood stationary. The mysterious wolves, growing in numbers till there were eight of them, started bounding towards Kodak. They whisked and waved around him, bouncing off each paw pad effortlessly, their tails curling to wrap around his pelt. Every touch of these ghostly wolves would send a strong chill throughout the small pup's body. After seven of these wolves did this little ritual, the eighth one approached Kodak directly. It was a beastly looking wolf , different from the others though he bore the same silvery, glinting outlines of the rest of them.
Kodak, shivering from the cold, finally decided to speak up. "Where am I? What have you done with me?" He cried out, cowering to the bigger wolf. His tail was tucked tightly beneath him and he crouched down to the floor to submit. The beastly wolf shook his head and suddenly bowed down to be Kodak's height. Wisps of light suddenly spread across the large wolf, circling around him to create this tornado of light streaks—then suddenly, the once beastly wolf was no larger than a pup the same age as Kodak.
"Kodak," the now small, silvery wolf softly called. "You are here to receive your path in life. We have known before you that this would happen. Your pack and your mother knows this too." They informed him, expression soft then growing sorrowful.
Kodak whimpered, 'path in life?' He thought confusingly. "But don't I already have my role?" He questioned, gaining a bit of his confidence back. Talking to a wolf who looked his age rather than some ancient, giant wolf was a lot easier.
The wispy wolf shook their head. "You exist in a pack that is not destined for you. You must leave. Once gone, I will come fetch you and help your journey."
Kodak's jaw dropped, "Leave?! Leave my pack?! Leave my mother?!" He cried, his ears flattened back defensively. "You want me to leave all life I've known? What am I even suppose to do anyways? You hear the elders of my pack! I'm just a pup!" He shouted out.
The other young pup looked longingly and sorrowfully at Kodak for a long while before answering, "It is written in the stars. You must fulfill this prophecy. You will see your mother again in time. I promise."
And with those few words, the ghostly pup vanished. Everything vanished and Kodak was no longer in the dreamlands.
He awoke in a spooked state, frantically twisting and turning to get up. Once up, he shook off the chilling cold feeling he could still feel from the mysterious wolves who met him in his dreams. His eyes adjusted harshly to the sudden brightness that the daytime was. "Momma?" He called from the bush he was stationed in. "Momma!!"
A small rustled was heard before a snout poked its way underneath. "Little pup?" A familiar, sweet voice called back. It was his mom. Kodak practically burst out from where he was hiding and tackled his mother's legs, clinging to them. Uncontrollable tears and whines ripped from him as he sobbed in his mother's legs.
"Mama! It was horrible! These scary wolves came to see me and told me I had to go away from you! I don't ever want to go away from you!!" He cried.
Kodak's mother stiffened and let out a sigh. "They've come to you.. I knew this day would come… I wish it wasn't so soon." She suddenly withdrew and flicked her tail, beckoning her son to follow. They traveled to the leader's den where Kodak was explained about the prophecy. How the pack knew and knew that one day, their beloved miracle pup would have to leave to fulfill his duties. It was all difficult news to accept… but gradually, after months of knowing what he was to do, Kodak came to terms with it. Now an adult, he was ready to fulfill his destiny.
The day he turned into an adult was the day he was sent away. The pack threw a farewell ceremony for him and his mother stayed close to him the entire day. Though she would never show it to his face, he knew she had been crying the entire day. The tearful look in her eyes were unbearable, and Kodak bore the same expression towards his mother. He would miss her dearly, and she would miss her only son.
The last of the ceremony concluded and now it was time for Kodak to leave. So that the destined wolf could always remember where he came from, he was granted the companionship of Bear, the herbalist's daughter who would help him fulfill his prophecy.
Kodak approached his mother after the ceremony had died down, now alone with only her and Bear. Bear stood off to the side, allowing Kodak to have a private moment with his mother.
"Farewell, mama." He said softly, stepping towards her and gently pressing his forehead against hers, his eyes closed. His ears were drawn back and his eyebrows were furrowed, his maw wrinkling as he was overcome with sudden depression. This would be the last time he saw his mother alive. He no doubt knew she was to pass when he was away, her body and bones growing weaker day by day that passed. This grievance of him leaving was surly to leave her weaker. His mother pressed back against him with a ferocious determination.
"I love you, my son. Don't ever forget your mother will always be here for you, waiting. You can come back whenever you need to, okay?" She whispered softly to him, her voice trembling with anguish. Kodak could feel his mothers' raw grief and his eyes started to shed tears.
"I know mama, I love you. Please look after yourself. I will be back before you know it…"

After leaving, Kodak knew his role was to form a new pack, one that was destined for greatness. With Bear by his side he strolled off to later form the glorious pack, Alsephina.
