Pupsitter: Coyotepelt
Deerheart was a charming little girl who loved attention from the adults. She would do just about anything to please them or just amuse them, making everyone laugh with her silly jokes and pretend games. She quickly became the favorite pup of all the pupsitters, especially Coyotepelt who saw in her a kindred fun-loving spirit. While any adult's attention would do for Deer, it was her mom Goldensong who she longed to capture most. But having a scout for a mom meant that opportunities to be noticed didn't come around every day. Golden was often gone for days at a time on scouting trips and may only be home for a day or two before being sent out again. So Deer had to be particularly arresting when she had the chance. One day, as Golden and Coyote were chatting in the courtyard, Deer climbed up the outside wall of the Grand Den and jumped off, shouting "I'm a bird!" The adults were horrified as she landed hard on her left front leg, breaking it in two places. Herbalist Duskflame was able to set and cast the leg quickly and it healed very well. But Deer still earned herself a scolding for that foolishness.
At the Academy, Deer was assigned to strengthen her weakest stats with speed, agility, and wisdom lessons. She could have been an excellent student, since she was naturally very smart, but she was always clowning in class. She wanted the attention of her teachers, and it didn't seem to matter if it was good or bad attention. Eventually, Coyote took Deer aside and explained to her that she would get nowhere in life acting that way. How could an Alpha trust her to do a job if she was always goofing? Deer would have to get more serious about school and her future if she wanted to be part of the pack and earn respect. Deer took this to heart and her behavior improved a lot, which her teachers appreciated. The excellent defensive instincts that surfaced in her during her Hiding and Recognizing Danger lessons made the pupsitters recommend her for a scout role. However, she'd already earned a reputation and Mentor Moondream decided to assign her last lesson.
During her apprenticeship, Deer went out into the wider lands to learn scouting work, sometimes with her mom and other times with her aunt Rainfrost. Everyone was concerned about Deer leaving home, considering that she was known for being a goof-off. But getting the one-on-one attention inherent in scout training seemed to calm Deer down and help her focus better. Her goofiness wasn't gone, but it ended up being an asset. Other wolves liked her sense of humor and she made many friends. Her mom's love of nature and her aunt's love of stories rubbed off on her somewhat and she learned to recognize dozens of species and tease out gossip from neighboring packs. Her elders could hardly believe her transformation, but for Deer it was all part of growing up.
On her first birthday, Deer was almost late to the party because she and her aunt had arrived home in the wee hours of morning. She nearly bit her cousin Autumnbreeze when she shook her awake to come to the party. But this was too special an occasion to miss, so she had to get up. Deer was still too tired to get properly drunk, but she downed one cup of fermented barley to mark the day.
Now as an adult, Deer still likes to get attention and make everyone laugh. But she knows when it's appropriate to be goofy and when she needs to be serious. While many scouts favor sleeping in the wild over letting their guard down in another pack's home, Deer prefers to spend her nights in the dens of her friends, trusting them to keep her safe. Some of her packmates wonder why she bothers to wear her cloak at all, since its purpose is to keep her warm and hidden in the wild at night. But Deer jokes that her friends might not recognize her without it. When she gets to be home for a few days, she always has a drink with her packmates, but never drinks as much as some others. She never knows when something will happen and she'll have to leave again right away.
