The Wisp Sings ~ Winter Aid:
Kaden was tired, so, so tired.
He hadn't stopped running and his paws were cracked. Blood and tears entwined through his fur, creating a cascading pattern of agony on his face.
He wanted to stop but he couldn't. Earlier he had paused for a drink of water, but then the cries had caught up to him, and he had broken into a dead sprint once more.
His lungs were burning, but his heart was ice cold. He kept seeing flashes of their faces, he kept hearing their screams.
So he kept running.
Blood flew through his vision, tufts of ripped-out fur floated through his sight. He could still hear her sobbing, hear his pained yelps, hear his own snarl.
He tripped, and he was sent tumbling into the undergrowth. He realised the trees weren't the same as the ones he had fled through initially. These ones were tall and pinecones decorated their branches, needle-like leaves forming the soft forest floor instead of normal, broader leaves.
The soft ground felt so wonderful on his tired bones. He didnt bother trying to press himself upwards. Maybe if he lay here, quiet and still, his coat would help him blend in, and the screams wouldn't find him.
A crack of a branch caused Kaden's wars to prick, and he scarcely breathed, hoping the sharp smell of blood wouldn't be detected by any enemies.
He heard a light sniffing, and he knew they picked up on the blood caked in his fur. His muscles tensed, and he prepared to spring up and out. He didn't know if he'd survive a fight in his condition, but he found that he didn't care.
"Hello?" A female's voice broke through the quiet forest. "I can smell you. Are you okay?" Her words were, surprisingly, filled with concern
He slowly, slowly raised his head, and spotted the speaker. She had a beautiful fawn coat, with darker waves patterning her fur. Her dust eyes found his olive ones.
"Oh my stars," she gasped as she saw the long scratches, still oozing blood, that crisscrossed his snout. Blood was dripping into his one eye, and every breath was painful. But he raised himself up, and set his shoulders. He was quite a large wolf, packed with muscle, and the blood decorating his fur wasn't making him look any less menacing. He raised his tail, his fur bristling.
She slunk closer, her tail and ears down, not meeting his eyes. "I want to help you," she said. "I won't hurt you. My alpha will help you."
She turned slowly, and trotted off, daring to put her back to him for a few moments. "Can you walk?"
He bared his teeth at her, but gingerly walked after her, staying many paces away. The female kept looking over her shoulder to check if he was following.
Soon, he began to smell the marks of other wolves, more and more until it smelled like they were all around him. Then they were.
Puppies rushed forward to greet the stranger, and adults too came closer to see what was going on. One adolescent sniffed at the blood on his thigh, coming way too close, and he whirled, snapping at the pup. She yelped and collapsed backward, and suddenly no one wanted to be too close. A few of the adults raised their hackles while others crowded the pups towards a hollow under a tree.
"Get Melchior," the female who'd found him was saying, but a few of the adults began surrounding him, baring their teeth. Kaden snarled a warning, watching as the wolves circled him. One wolf crouched, preparing to lunge, but the fawn female threw herself in front of him.
"He's hurt!" she shouted. "Leave him be! Get Melchior!"
A loud snarl cut through the growls of his assailants. Everyone silenced, turning to a wolf with a lion pelt over her shoulders that had quietly broken through the trees. Immediately they made way for her, and she approached Kaden. She studied him, not saying a word. Kaden felt the last of his energy ebbing away under her gaze.
"Come," the alpha said, and without another word, she turned and walked off. Kaden, encouraged by the wolf who found him, followed her nervously.
The alpha approached a cave formed by a large, old pine tree. She barked in, and a solid black wolf emerged from the shadows. The alpha jerked her head at him, and the black wolf nodded, vanishing only to return shortly with a bunch of herbs and a few salves.
"I am Aarmal," the alpha finally says as the herbalist begins working. "The melanistic wolf working on you is Melchior, but he's deaf so don't bother."
She leaned towards him, studying his eyes. "Let's get one thing clear," she said. "I don't want to know what you did. I don't care. But lay a paw on any wolf here, and I will finish the job someone else started."
Kaden closed his eyes as fresh pain from his wounds, brought on by the salve the herbalist was applying, summoned tears to his eyes.
Could you do it anyway? he thought.
~~~
Kaden's old bones dragged his tired body to the herbalist's cave for the sixth time in as many days. Melchior always had this concerned yet piercing look about him, and his brow furrowed even more when Kaden flopped down on the soft moss carpet that occupied one corner.
"Side. Pain," he gestured with a flick of his ears and a claw to the ground. He didn't speak the unspoken language of their deaf herbalist as well as Aarmal did, but he'd learned enough of it to pass on basic messages.
Melchior was beside him very quickly, applying a salve mixed specially for his damn infected injury. It was extremely annoying and it affected his hunting performance greatly. The female that had joined his team was showing him up during each hunt, quickly proving to be a formidable hunter. Faolan held no impatience towards him and sometimes even allowed him to lead the charge despite him being slower and weaker than the springy female.
As the melanistic herbalist worked silently on his expiring flesh, Kaden's eyes fluttered shut.
The Wisp Sings ~ Winter Aid:
Come with me
There are people who cannot speak
Without smiling
But they would take me from your hand
