a huge, barreling male more bear than wolf it seems. His gruff exterior belies a gentle soul.
He was sent to find Ämmä.
Her brother, Uros, had heard stories of a lone she-wolf living in the harsh mountainside. His heart had fluttered at the thought of his dear sister being alive and he immediately dispatched the able-bodied son of his best scout to find her.
Otso traveled far, using the skills his father had taught him to track the she-wolf he had never met, but she continued to elude him over several moons. Perhaps from sheer luck, he thought.
On a spring day he noted something odd... his quarry had mingled with another wolf's near a creek bed. There was no sign of a struggle in the tracks, and no sign of panic in the scents. Could Ämmä have found a mate?
Otso quickly took after the two fading scents and after several days tracking he came to the boundary of a very large pack. With the utmost caution he proceeded into the lush Taiga Valley, avoiding the wolves of the pack who, by the end of the day were on to his presence and actively searching for the intruder. By sheer luck the one to stumble upon him was... Ämmä? She fit the description of his alpha's sister but she was far too young... Otso's age, in fact. He stood frozen as they were immediately face-to-face, but there was no aggression in her demeanor, only curiosity. She would not raise the alarm.
"You smell... familiar." She blurted matter-of-factly.
"Ämma??" Otso broke questioningly , still startled by her sudden appearance.
"Ämmä? No, Kalma..." her brow was furrowed as she looked him over quizzically. How did he know her mother's name?
"Oh I..." He composed himself, clearing his throat and steeling himself, "I was sent by Alpha Uros of the Frozen Lands beyond the mountain to find his sister, Ämmä. I must've picked up your scent and followed you by mistake."
"Oh." She said simply, regarding him. "She's dead. She passed away last season. It was very sad."
Otso was at a loss for words. Firstly, how did this young she-wolf know this? Secondly, how was she so non-chalant about the passing? Was she lying"
Kalma continued, "you must be a very good tracker to follow my new friend Baldur and I all the way down the mountainside!" Visibly cheering, she gave a small play bow. "Come, you must meet him and the rest of this pack! I haven't been here so long but they're all wonderful." She turned and crashed back through the brush before her sentence was even complete.
