Biography

California Chrome is a California-bred multiple graded stakes winner, including the 2014 Kentucky Derby and 2014 Preakness Stakes. His three-year-old season caused an uproar, as he was the 7th horse in the dry streak after Affirmed's successful bid in 1978 to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown. However, he got stepped on coming out of the gate in the Belmont, which took a chunk out of his right front heel and cut a tendon. He still finished a valiant fourth, beaten by under two lengths.

His win as a five-year-old in the 2016 Dubai World Cup made him the all-time leading North American horse in earnings won, surpassing Curlin.
