Shattered Twilight concentrated on the bumblebee hovering above a large, white flower. Nothing else existed in this very special moment, and Blue of the Deep Pond couldn't help but watch in approval.
Money I've made off of him:
3000 SC, 7 GC
When Shattered Twilight was just a pup, he was a she-wolf. He believed he would be a she-wolf until the end of his days. However, it was not meant to be.
Even when he was young, he saw the shift in the behavior of the pack. Before, they were all open and friendly, playing with him at an equal amount to his littermates. But one day, Shattered Twilight spotted Sunset Shines Over the Lake rushing into Fir's Cones den, and after that, everything changed.
Later, Twilight found out that Sunset had had an omen. An omen that marked him as the future stud and leader of the pack, as a faithful follower of the goddess, and as the one who would kill Fir's Cones. Most leaders would have tried to kill this puppy, knowing that it would be the one to kill them, but not Fir's Cones. Fir accepted his fate as the will of the goddess and instead devoted himself to training Shattered Twilight.
On his second moonday, Shattered Twilight was awoken by his mother, Forest Blooms Green, as he was carefully picked up and carried outside. Forest only hushed him when he sleepily asked what was going on. When he finally was put down, he opened his eyes to see a huge cavern filled with dripping, glowing moss. Sunset, Fir, and the current stud Bared Fangs waited patiently at the edge of a pool which glowed brighter than the moss and seemed to swirl from blue to pink to purple and back again. Shattered Twilight was afraid and tried to hide behind his mother, but she gently pushed him forward, assuring him everything would be okay. Fir's Cones filled a large, bowl-like leaf with the liquid and pushed it towards Shattered Twilight, urging him to drink. Sunset added that it was the will of the goddess, and Shattered Twilight shook as he contemplated defying the will of the goddess. Bedtime stories were told to the puppies of what happened to the wolves who tried to rebel against the goddess. He had no choice but to drink.
The next morning, when he woke up a he-wolf, his world was completely changed. Gone were the fun games, the equal treatment. Even the most senior of wolves seemed almost...afraid of him. Like somehow the word had gotten out of his fate, not that he knew it himself at the time. And instead of games, Bared Fangs, Sunset, and Fir would each take turns speaking to him. Training him for his future roles as leader, stud, and word of the goddess. Of course, Bared Fangs didn't want to expose him to anything too early, as he was just a puppy, so mostly he talked of the respect one had to have for those around them, laying the groundwork for teaching Shattered Twilight to be respectful of those he bred with.
Fir's Cones taught him leadership skills. How to make the hard decisions, how to keep going. Sunset taught him reading the goddess' will. How to decide what was for the good of the pack and the goddess, no matter how brutal or callous it may seem to an outsider.
Shattered Twilight was no stranger to what may have been called "brutal" to outsiders. When he was just over six moondays, his mother was chased out of the pack for being disloyal to the goddess. Twilight watched her go with a pang of regret, but he did not mourn. She was disobedient, she must be eliminated lest she spread her weakness. His siblings were all killed off, one by one, except for the last one from his mother's last litter. That one went to another pack to try to convert them to the goddess' will. Twilight hoped to see him again, but did not hope too hard. These missionary quests never generally turned out well.
Eventually, Shattered Twilight grew from a bumbling, cotton-headed puppy into a hard, confident wolf. At his twelfth moonday, or his first year, Sunset informed him of the omens. Shattered Twilight was not surprised. He had seen the way the other wolves treated him, and he knew he was destined for something special. Killing Fir's Cones would be a trial, as the old wolf's honor wouldn't let him go down without a fight, but the old wolf was just that - old. He wouldn't last long. Being a stud would wait until Bared Fangs died a natural death, but he was also getting on in years. Taking the throne would only mean waiting a few moons for Bared Fangs to pass and then he would fulfill each part of the prophecy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Shattered Twilight raised his head from the blood-smeared corpse of Fir's Cones to gaze at the circle of wolves that stood around him, from pups, wide-eyed and nervous, to the most senior of pupsitters. He had finally done it. He was wavering from blood loss, having sustained several deep scratches across his flanks and a wound dangerously deep in his neck. But he had killed Fir's Cones. The prophecy was fulfilled.
He looked to the wolves surrounding him. Their eyes almost seemed to shine as they stood, frozen, and as he watched, the spirits of wolves padded up behind them. Shattered Twilight saw his mother, other wolves he had watched die, and even Fir's Cones himself, shining bright. He did not attempt to speak with them, and they did not speak to him. Suddenly, in one smooth motion, each wolf, dead, alive, young, and old, bowed to him, stretching their paws out in front of themselves. They accepted him as their new leader, though it was only a formality, as it was the goddess' will. Shattered Twilight stood in the sunlight among the pine trees, the new vessel of a goddess, the new leader of a pack, and the future stud. And he felt glorious.
