Cougarleap was a confident little girl who was a natural leader at playtime. If there was a game being played or a nursery song being sung, she was right in the middle of it. She just knew she was capable of a lot, even when she did silly things to make other pups laugh. It was common knowledge that she and her brother Timbermarsh were the only pups from their litter staying in the pack, and no one was particularly surprised, not even Cougar herself. But she wasn't arrogant or mean. Her mother Beeflight taught her early that being the strongest meant she had a responsibility to help others and not mistreat them. Cougar took that lesson to heart and was everyone's friend in the nursery.
At the Academy, Cougar was assigned to study strength and speed to prepare for a career as a finisher. Her confidence shone brightly in every lesson and her teachers praised her willingness to take on new challenges. But studying strength while her friends went elsewhere made her feel isolated from them. Even though none of them teased her about it, having this unique experience put distance between her and them that she didn't like. Ghostshadow told her that in time she would feel the split much less and it wouldn't bother her so much. Cougar wanted to believe her, but she had doubts. She just wanted to be like everyone else. That was why she chose to join everyone for a basic hunting lesson for her last class.
During her apprenticeship, Cougar went out on the trail with her mother to learn finishing work. As long as she was running and herding the prey with the other apprentices, she was happy as a clam. But as she got older and stronger, she found herself different again, expected to learn to be the killer in the group. After she finished a muskrat that the hunting team had cornered, she saw the other youngsters look at her differently, and it crushed her. No matter how Bee encouraged her to embrace her role, Cougar just was not happy with the situation. But then, when the apprentices were helping to corner a moose cow, everything changed for Cougar. Her fellow apprentice Gingerwhisker charged too close to the prey. The moose lashed out with her hooves, but Cougar was quicker, chomping down on the moose's leg and opening a huge gash. Ginger had time to jump away and the moose was weakened, much easier to take down. The hunters praised Cougar for her bravery and she was the hero of all the apprentices, especially Ginger. Suddenly, being different wasn't so bad and neither was being a finisher.
On her first birthday, Cougar reveled in the respect and admiration that she'd earned as a finisher. Being like everyone else didn't seem so important anymore. Ghost's words came back to her and she laughed to think that she almost hadn't believed her back then.
Now as an adult, Cougar lives by her mother's lessons about responsibility and her own understanding that being different is a good thing. She's still the confident one on the hunting trail and encourages her teammates to greater effort. Even when a hunt hasn't gone well, she's the first one telling everyone that the next one will be better. She's never afraid to take on new challenges or adventures and her packmates know that they can count on her to be ready for anything. Deep down, she still has trouble remembering that she's different in a good way sometimes, but Ginger helps her remember.
