Nobody knows where Shadow came from- he doesn't speak of the past. He just showed up one day and asked to join, so Bailey let him. He's a friendly wolf, but he doesn't speak all that much. He's always hopeful that everything will be okay. He's a strange hunter and uses tactics none of the others have heard of, but he's quite good.
