Childhood
Later in the day, Moose was leading Plutus around the nursery. When Plutus nearly bumped into something Moose grabbed him by the scruff. Plutus shoved him off in annoyance. "Why can't you just let me learn instead of babying me?!" He huffed as he continued to feel around the den with his paws. Moose sighed as he gave a small nuzzle to his significantly smaller brother. "I'm sorry Plutus, I just worry." He said in a quiet tone. Plutus smiled as he tried to face near Moose's voice. "I know you're just trying to protect me but there will be a day where you can't anymore."
One morning when Moose woke up, he couldn't find Plutus anywhere. He searched around frantically for his brother, the only other wolf awake was Shinzu, who sat atop his rock staring at the sky. Moose stomped towards him. As he opened his mouth to speak, Shinzu spoke. "I know what you are going to say. You're going to ask me if I've seen Plutus, and I have." Moose stayed silent, waiting for him to continue and he did. "Plutus left under the cover of darkness to become a traveler, he did not want to upset you." He said.
Moose scoffed as he stood beside the old wolf. "Well I'm still upset!" He snapped. "First Mouse, now Plutus? Do they hate me that much? Am I that horrible to be around?" He seethed. Shinzu glanced towards him. "Now now Moose, you aren't horrible to be around. Their destinies lied elsewhere, that doesn't mean they love you any less. Your paths are different, is all." He said calmly.
Moose looked down as he sat beside him, tears forming in his usually hard eyes. "But they're my family... I don't want to be alone." He whispered, his voice strained by the sob he was holding back. Shinzu gently pressed against him, giving him a few comforting licks to his cheek. "There, there. Moose you're never alone, sure they may have been your siblings but this pack is also your family. We all care about you and love you in turn, you'll never be alone." He soothed, resting his chin on the young adolescents head.
Meeting Malice
Moose was enjoying his meal in the corner of the clearing, on purpose he sat away from everyone else. That is until he heard the familiar voice of Malice, on an instant his heart began to race. As she approached and greeted him, for a moment he softened and almost smiled at her. He got ahold of himself and he spoke, "What do you want?" He asked her, a pang of guilt began in him as he realized it was a little harsher than he intended. Luckily though it didn't seem to phase her as she sat beside him and smiled at him--stars her smile put the sun to shame--and dropped the squirrel at her paws, she explained that she came to join him as he seemed lonely. How much better could this wolf get? Moose shook the thought away, scoffing as he looked away so she wouldn't see his smile. "I do just fine alone." He told her as he took another bite of his rabbit. What she said next hit him hard, "Moose, I know what it's like to lose someone you care about. I can't imagine how hard it was having both of your siblings leave you." She had said. A part of Moose wanted to break down and cry like a pup but instead he let his anger take the wheel. His head snapped up as a growl escaped his throat, his eyes locked on Malice, "Who told you--" His pupils narrowed in realization. "Volpe did, didn't she?" He said, a bit of shock in his tone. Volpe always stuck her nose in his business, she was annoying. Malice nudged him, trying to remain cheerful as she spoke, "Yeah, she cares about you, you know." She said. Moose looked away and cringed at the thought of Volpe caring for him so he decided to change the topic, "Do you... Want to join me on a scouting patrol tomorrow?" He asked slowly, trying to annoy the nerves that ran up his spine, "I want to make it up to you-- I've been nothing but rude to you." He added, and it was true, Malice deserved better from him. When she agreed the tip of Moose's tail began to sway slightly.
The next evening they were walking through the desert side by side. He couldn't restrain himself from sharing facts about the wildlife and terrain, at first he felt apologetic about his facts but when he heard her giggle it was like the Earth was blessing his ears with the sound. He just couldn't get enough of it, and so they walked on and he shared as much facts as he could think of. That is until she spoke up, "So... You and Volpe huh?" She said. Moose was confused and had no idea what she was talking about, even when he saw the suggestive smirk on her face, "What are you talking about?" He asked. As he asked this her smirk dropped, which almost made him frown, and her eyes widened in a shocked expression, "Volpe likes you, did you really not know?" She asked him, an amused chuckle following afterwards. Moose could feel his ears warm with embarrassment as he avoided her gaze and shrugged, "She isn't my type. She's a very kind wolf but I just don't feel that way about her." He said bluntly, and it was true. He had grown up with Volpe but he just didn't see her like that. His right ear twitched as he heard her speak again, "So, what is your type then?" She asked. That question made him stop and as he glanced down at her his whole face flushed with heat, "O-Oh uh--" He stammered for a moment before finding his words, "Somewolf who's understanding I suppose. One who can look past my angry demeanor." As he said this his tone got quieter with each word. 'You' he wanted to say, but he couldn't say that, could he?
They had grown close in recent days and Moose had invited Malice for a walk through the forest with him. It was dusk and he could see Malice watch the sky change colors, he intentionally walked behind her so he could watch her in awe, he was so nervous for what was about to come. Once they got to the spot he spoke up, "Hey... Malice, can I tell you something?" He asked softly as he did not want to startle her, that's the last thing he wanted to do. When she turned to look at him his breath hitched, she was gorgeous, "Yes, Moose?" She said and he practically melted at her voice. He shuffled his paws nervously as he tried to keep his breathing steady. What if she didn't want him? No, no, don't think like that. He looked down into her perfect white eyes, they were like two perfect pearls, "I-- erm, well... I wanted to tell you that uhm..." He trailed off as he tried to avoid her gaze, how could he speak correctly when she looked at him like that? He took a deep sigh before mustering up any courage he had, "I like you, I like you a lot Malice. And well, I was wondering if... You'd like to be my mate." He finally got it out as he stared down at her, he tried to keep a stoic face but if she looked close enough she could see his eyes sparkling with hope. When her eyes widened in shock and she froze he was almost certain he messed up and he started to regret the whole evening, that was until she tackled him onto the ground and had her face rubbing against his joyously, "Yes! Yes of course!" She answered, relief washed over him. After a few moments of nuzzling they sat beneath a tree and watched the sun set, the stars were beginning to come out and twinkle just for them. He rested his chin on her head, his eyes shut in contentment until he remembered, "Oh I almost forgot!" He said as he turned to a bush and pulled out the crown he had made earlier of burning bush branches. He turned back to her and placed it upon her head, "I made this for you, so you can feel like the queen you really are. The berries reminded me of your fur." He said, his voice doused in affection for her. She nuzzled her nose into his shoulder, "You're the best, Moose..." She whispered. He closed his eyes as a burst of warmth exploded through his body, he wanted to give her the world and he'd do his best to do just that.
Moose's life was nothing but sunshine in the recent days as his patrols were all plentiful and Malice was expecting his pups soon, what more could he want? Until he heard the unmistakable yowl of Malice and without a second thought he bolted off towards his pack, his paws slamming against the ground and his claws kicking up clumps of dirt as he ran. As soon as he got into the clearing he saw one of the badgers enter the nursery and he took off, all it took was for him to see the cowering image of his mate to ignite his anger. His pupils narrowed as his lips curled back into a snarl, his big form blocking the den entrance as he stared down the badger. Without a second thought he lunged forward, he ignored the badger's claws raking down the side of his face as his jaws clamped around the badger's throat. His pupils narrowed in satisfaction as he felt his teeth sink into the Badger's flesh and the blood on his tongue as he shook the badger side to side viciously. When he was sure it was dead he tossed it towards the entrance of the den and he turned towards his love. He licked the blood from his muzzle as he slowly approached her as to not scare her. "Please tell me you're alright darling, I came as fast as my paws would take me..." He whispered, his tone carrying a hint of panic. When he saw her reassuring smile he calmed down, "I'm alright, I'm alright Moose." She said in that soothing voice of hers. His face warmed as he felt her lick the gashes on the side of his face, "You're wounded." She said with a frown. He shook his head as he looked down at her, his eyes overflowing with affection, "I'd let my body get covered in numerous scars before I let one grace your pelt." He whispered as he layed beside her and rested his head on hers, his eyes glancing towards her swelling belly. "I'll protect you and our pups, even if it means my demise." He thought to himself as he closed his eyes.
After Malice delivered their pups safely, she regrettably had to bid Moose farewell and he could feel his heart shatter in his chest as he looked up on his two sons curled up by his paws. He settled down and nuzzled them, determined to turn them into the best wolves ever.
