Foalan became the first Herbalist for the pack when he was merely 2 years old, he disliked the job but Ember had asked him politely to take the position when the Tribe had formed, Foalan graciously accepted the role as it was important. He trained his son, Ghost, the ways of the Herbalist, as much as he learned, before passing down the role to him and becoming the Tribes First Mentor.
