Betelgeuse

Named after the second-brightest star in the constellation Orion. 

Mate: Callisto

Offspring: Vega, Antares, Schedar 

Personality: Charming, quick-witted, and a major goofball, Betelgeuse was the one to turn to when in need of cheering up. While his jokes could be rather cheap, and his tendency to shamelessly flirt with anyone could be annoying, he genuinely meant well. He frequently bolstered his own ego, inflating his scouting tales so they bordered on ridiculous. He found commitment difficult, having enjoyed his roles as a scout and breeding male so he could flit from place to place, never stuck in the same situation. Unfortunately, this resulted in Betelgeuse being rather distant towards his pups inside the pack, being unsure how to interact with them. Since the passing of his mate, Callisto, he attempted to make more of an effort.

Betelgeuse was one of the founding members of the pack, and was one of the very first scouts. As a scout, he spent the majority of the time away from the territory, returning only to report information, receive new directions and crack a joke with a wink before setting off again. While on his expeditions, he would delight in flexing his charisma like a bouquet of roses to other neighbouring wolves, siring a great number of pups outside of the pack. Not that he cared to visit them, of course. Upon retiring, he spent most of his time with his offspring, and providing tips to the pack's new scouts. He has since past away of old age during the winter, survived by his three pups.

A few pups carry his blood inside the pack, Betelgeuse having offered his surrogate services to pack members that were reaching retirement, so their legacies lived on. As a thanks, his offspring share the same naming conventions as him, being named after stars. He was very paws-off during his pups' puppyhood and adolescence, keeping his distance and abstaining from any fatherly duties. 

He had a close friendship with Crommelin. When they both had working roles, they would often seek each other out after their scouts to brag about what they had seen, arguing loudly about who was the bravest, the most daring, and so on. On some evenings, the two would still weave together tall, exaggerated stories about their adventures to tell the pups, who always sat with their mouths open, completely rapt. Whichever pup asked to hear the story "Betelgeuse and the Falling Pineapple", however, would be sent to bed early -- no excuses. 

Betelgeuse, while he was no stranger to flattering and talking about himself, was actually unexpectedly quiet about his past life before joining the Sagittarius Pack. Pups, always enraptured by his stories, had occasionally pressed him for details about his history, but the subject was always hastily twisted into another scouting tale. Through their persistence, the pups managed to squeeze a few drops of information. It is known that Betelgeuse once belonged to a pack that hailed in the prairie, where their tawny fur helped them blend with their surroundings. His previous pack was described to be strict, abrasive, and conflicting with Betelgeuse's free-spirited and untethered nature. Descriptions of his family were always vague, and always with a hint of bitterness. Whatever information pups could wrangle out of him always concluded with the statement that Betelgeuse was happier where he was now, and he never looked back.

During their early interactions, he and Callisto got along together very well. The hunter was the only one who'd indulge in his flirtatious nature, responding with a clever quip regardless of what he tossed her way. One thing led to another, and Callisto bore his pups. Unfortunately, they all soon passed due to complications, only living for a few days. Loathing Betelgeuse's cold and avoidant way of coping, Callisto broke ties with him, the two hardly meeting each other's eyes. After a few, tense years estranged, the two reconciled, officially becoming mates. They had another pup, Schedar, and while Betelgeuse continued to struggle with fatherhood, he gradually improved.
