"Nix has passed away," Sable announces, grief thick in her voice. She's quick to make her escape, after adding, "Her Farewell will be held this evening as the sun sets. Bring what you like to honour her memory."
Of course, Jakita is saddened that Nix is gone. She was a gem, a pure-hearted soul, but it is not Nix who holds Jakita's thoughts right now. She glances over at the Ivy Oak Warren and sees her son, Nix's apprentice, Tarnei. His face is screwed up in what is a poor attempt at hiding his despair, but Jakita has raised this boy since he came into the world -- she knows him.
Without warning, he stands and whips around, shouldering his way into the warren. Jakita stands and dips her head, rushing over after him. She finds him in the darkest corner, hunched over himself, hears him sniffling.
"I'm sorry, Tarnei," she whispers as she approaches, nudging his ears. "I'm so sorry. I know you were fond of her."
The way Tarnei presses back into her, searching for his mother's comfort, is unmistakeable. His coming-of-age is tomorrow -- Jakita will spend the rest of her life wondering why Nix had left before she could see it -- and yet he is still just a vulnerable pup in her eyes. "She taught me everything I know," he says, voice cracking and breaking.
Jakita chews her words. She knows she needs to be sensitive about this. After some consideration, she says, "You have to believe that you can do it all without her."
"Oh, of course," Tarnei lifts his head marginally, "I don't just believe that, Mother. I know I can. Because... Because I have to. The sanctum needs me now, and... I have to honour Nix's legacy. Her knowledge is an achievement, her life's work. I won't let it go to waste."
Jakita can't help the proud smile as she stands, preparing to give her son some peace and quiet to process. "That's my boy, Tarnei," She licks his ear fondly. "I am so proud of you."
