Milo the Wanderer

The tale of Milo is not a happy one. He and his mate Kaya, were the first to encounter the newly-mated Larka and Kavann when the young pair had just set out to form their new pack. Desperate for shelter, Milo agreed to serve these new alpha wolves on the condition that his unborn pups, growing in Kaya's belly, be cared for as well as any of the Alpha's. Larka agreed, and so the Starcallers were formed.
But those early days were not easy - food was scarce and there was barely enough to sustain the hunters, let alone helpless newborns. Faced with the impossible choice of who should live, Kaya and Larka came up with a plan: Kaya would leave in trade to another pack, in the hopes that the new pack would be better able to feed her new pups, and to give the Starcallers time to survive the winter. In time, Kaya might return, in better seasons. Milo reluctantly agreed, knowing that his pups would not survive with him, and wished his mate well in her journey. He spent less and less time in the den after that, choosing instead to prowl the borders of the territory, searching for any scrap of the scent of his mate.
For a time, it seemed this plan would work, until news arrived: Kaya was dead, her pups lost. The new pack had not sheltered them. Milo was devastated, and Larka - fully believing her promise to Milo had been irrevocably shattered - prepared for his departure.
But instead the lone wolf surprised her: he came to Larka, and proposed a contract, one that would help the pack grow strong enough to prevent such a tragedy from ever occurring again. Larka agreed and the Compact, a document which would define the Starcallers for generations, was born; and so the tale of Milo the Wanderer is one we tell to all our pups, so that they may better understand our history as they help to shape our future.
