CHAPTER ONE: LONE WOLF NO LONGER
Lugeiros Moonwalker watched as the fish swam around in the brook's waters, lazily passing the time by counting them. He was alone, for the last member of his pack had died a fortnight ago. They were elderly, and admittedly, it had been a long time coming. Even so, it had been the two of them together, and that had been his pack. All the others had left long ago, whether from old age or leaving the pack to form their own.
The words of his elder still swirled around in his mind. "I want you to prosper, Lugeiros," they had said between death rattles. They had died soon after and Lugeiros Noname had taken theirs to remember them by. Moonwalker had a nice ring to it, anyway.
Still, the question remained of just how he was supposed to prosper while out here on his lonesome. He'd aimlessly wandered the mountainside for the past two weeks wondering just that.
Which led him to this brook. He'd found himself thirsty and followed the scent of mud to this place, where there was nothing but a little stream and several fish swimming in it. Before long, he'd found himself watching them. Boring how they swam around without a care in the world. At some point he began counting them, stopping when he lost track only to start over.
But even that became dull after a while. Lugeiros picked himself up from the bank of the stream and shook what water had gotten in his fur out before wandering in a random direction. He was sure he hadn't been this way before. And who knew, maybe it would lead to something great.
Hilariously enough, his aimless wandering led him straight into another wolf.
This other wolf was a she-wolf, pale where his coat was dark, and with yellow eyes. He apologized for knocking into her to which she apologized as well. Apparently, neither of them were paying attention to their surroundings at the time.
She mentioned searching for a place to stay and he offered to show her to a cave he'd been hiding out in since the death of his namesake. She ended up following him in the end, and thus began their stay in the cave.
Days passed and the only time either one of them left the cave was to hunt or else take care of something they needed to. They would both always return, without fail. He hadn't realized that he had walked right into a new pack until one night in particular when it was raining too hard for either of them to go out exploring. There was nothing else to do, so they got to talking.
"I'm an orphan," Reythyra confessed. "I've been alone since I was barely into my adolescence. Until I met you, that is."
"I never knew my parents," Lugeiros admitted easily. "I was adopted by the time I was weaned, so I don't remember them. It was an older couple who took me in. All of their other children had grown, but they wanted just one more."
"What was that like?" Reythyra asked.
"It was nice," he said, remembering all the time he'd spent with his parents before they died. "I was a little terror, pulling pranks all the time. There was one time I covered my pupsitter in feathers and I got chewed out for hours."
They spent a while more talking about their youths before the conversation died down and they went to sleep.
Naturally, days turned into weeks, and still neither of them left. He finally broached the subject of becoming a true pack with her in a way that would cause her to flee, and to his surprise, she agreed. They named the pack Wildfate, and that was that.
