0 months: Born into the Ashen Pack alongside a sister - Whisper - to Loam, a Scout who won't speak about the pups' father. 

2 1/2 months: As soon as Snicker and her sister are weaned, Loam goes out of her way to avoid them, heading out to scout and staying away for days at a time. Snicker and Whisper are cared for by the pack's Pupsitters, but Snicker quickly grows to resent her mother. 

5 months: Snicker becomes good friends with 2 slightly younger pups, brothers Kiyo and Badger. Whisper is more timid and remains on the sidelines while the other pups play. 

9 months: While Snicker grows more boisterous and dominant in her small circle of friends, becoming the unofficial leader of the trio, she also shows promise as a hunter, and learns to be serious and focused when necessary. As such, she is liked well enough by her older packmates and feels at home within the pack. Meanwhile, Whisper begins to drift away, spending more time alone. 

11 months: Whisper reveals that she's been visiting a neighbouring pack and has made a lot of friends there. She is leaving to join them. 

The rest of the Ashen Pack are saddened, but want Whisper to do what she must to be happy. Snicker is devastated, not realising how far apart they'd grown. When Whisper leaves, Loam doesn't react, as if her daughter is a passing loner. Snicker, noticing this, initiates a fight with her mother. It turns physical, but is quickly broken up by the leaders. 

Loam wanders off to scout and doesn't return for a week. Snicker curls up in her den in the Cavern, flanked by Kiyo and Badger. 

1 year: The situation between Snicker and Loam becomes irreparable when the Scout has a second litter whom she barely interacts with. Again, she won't speak of the father, but the two pups don't resemble Snicker or her sister at all, clearly sired by a different wolf. Snicker refuses to have anything to do with her dam or half-siblings, becoming very foul-tempered. 

1 year, 1 month: Snicker is shocked out of her bad mood when the brothers Kiyo and Badger are told that they are, in fact, unrelated. The distraught Kiyo informs Snicker that when he had shyly confided in his supposed mother, Cloud, about his crush on another young adult in the pack, he had been gently informed that the wolf in question was actually a close relative of his. As it turns out, he is the offspring of Mistral - the leaders' pup - and an unknown male, but was given up by Mistral as she was unprepared to care for him. 

Kiyo sticks close to Snicker for some days, seeking comfort in her strong presence that she is happy to provide. Badger frequently goes off by himself and snaps when questioned. Neither say it aloud, but Snicker and Kiyo are both secretly frightened that he might be visiting a different pack, like Whisper. 

1 year, 1/2 month: Once the youngsters have had time to process the new information, they calm down enough to reconcile with the adults who had concealed the truth, understanding their reasons for doing so. Badger apologises to his friends for ditching them, and the three become closer than ever.
