Kin procrastinated herself into exile from her birth pack, after she became too slow to complete her rite of passage. Kin, being a natural-born pacifist, was torn between her wish to not kill other-packwolves and her desire to remain assimilated into her birth-pack. She figured if she put it off long enough the problem would simply disappear.
She was incorrect. Her former pup-sitter got Kin to confide in her, brought the reason to the leader, and Kin was forcibly removed for being a "traitor though cowardice."
Upon exile, she discovered a friend of hers, Heron, had followed her out. Heron was not a pacifist. Heron was perfectly happy to kill those who strayed too deep into her territory. Heron was, however, hopelessly in love with her dumbass girlfriend. Officially, her reason for joining Kin is "that's a really dumb fucking reason to exile someone," and that she "wouldn't want to take orders from a dumbass."
(Unluckily for Heron, that is exactly what she has found herself doing. Oh no.)
