Cypress' and Winter's first-born son, Aspen was originally intended to be the pack's heir. Aspen, however, wished to not be responsible for the pack's wellbeing, as he was, in his own words, "too carefree and irresponsible for that." Cypress respected his son's wishes and let him lead the pack's primary hunting party instead. Aspen was more than content with that responsibility, and got along well with his fellow hunters.
