Artemisia

Even as a young wolf Artemisia was daring and when she left puppyhood she was the only one of her litter brave enough to seek out a new territory, far from the human encroachments that grew greater every year. 

She traveled hundreds of kilometers, crossing mountains, rivers and prairies at first alone, but soon joined by others, all of them looking for a place to call home.  They found it in the most unlikely place - a desert landscape that a first seemed barren and forbidding but soon proved to be the ideal place for those with the endurance and ingenuity to make it their own.  A rock cave by a small hidden stream, screened by a stand of spindly aspens became their den and from there the pack grew and prosper.

Artemisia came back from her adventures in the Lunar Dreamland somehow... changed.  Her eyes were no longer yellow but violet, and what had initially been a barely visible marking on her forehead became a bright, white blaze for all to see.

As the years lengthened time began to take its toll on the original Aspen Leaf Pack members - first it was Snowshed the pack's first healer, then one by one the others fell away until only Artemisia was left.  Her deceased packmates had left behind many children and new wolves had also joined the pack and Artemisia loved them all dearly but she still felt the loss of her friends keenly.

Feeling age begin to weigh on her she began the search for her successor.  None of her surviving children had either the desire nor the aptitude for leadership.  But there was one youngster who did:  Troublesome, rude and disruptive Fernflower's son Lycium none-the-less showed a talent for leading.  Under Artemisia's guidance he gradually was shaped into a wolf who was strong enough and cleaver enough to lead the pack into a new era.
