(The Present)
Hey I'm Kipper and I'm a Beta. I was a hunter in my youth, and I was the first wolf to ever join the pack. For the longest time I never thought I'd find love again, but I have found it once again in Val, my Alpha and bondmate.
(The Past)
Ā As a pup Kipper worried about everything, but with good reason. His ma, Snowbird, and the packs second alpha, Nightstar, had been running off alone together for the past few weeks. Even at the tender age of two months, Kipper knew that meant trouble. He spent those long, lonely days without his mother suckling milk from his aunts or playing with his cousins. He was the only pup in his litter to survive this long, so his five month old cousins where the closest wolves to his age range. When he wasn't stumbling after them, he was curled up with one of his aunts. There were five of them, six when you counted his mother, all littermates.
Ā When his ma's belly started to swell, word began to travel around and in a pack full of mostly females, it didn't take long to figure out who bred her. Nightstar's bondmate, Collie, one of the few males in the pack and first alpha, soon heard of Snowbird's pregnancy and he quickly became livid. He demanded that the bond-wrecking omega be expelled from the pack, even as Nightstar pleaded forgiveness for his unborn pups. He made a valiant effort to earn pity points for them. Twisting his actions by stating that he only bred her so he and Collie could finally have pups of their own. Collie however, didn't care about his cheating bondmates intentions, he hadn't ask for pups and he most certainly didn't want them from a pup who couldn't control herself during her first heat.
Ā In his pack, yearlings were supposed to abstain during their first heat. It let their bodies finish growing and helped keep inbreeding to a minimum as most two year olds left their home pack in search of a new one. It also showed strength, discipline, and respect for themselves and those around them. A pup willing to mate so young, is one that invites trouble and Collie had seen this up close. He had seen Kipper and his struggles, had seen what happens when siblings get just a little too close, he loathed to see the havoc a father-daughter-possible sibling, pairing. If these pups survived they would be malformed and struggle for most of their lives, perhaps this was something the little inbred omega needed to learn on her own. Their pack had very strict rules when it came to breeding and he wasn't about to let Nightstar forget that.Ā
Ā Finding themselves on the edge of pack territory, Kipper and his ma tried their hardest to survive the frozen tundra. Kipper had to grow up fast, his ma wouldn't be able to worry about him in a few weeks. He started small, helping her find a safe place to den and fetching her nesting things. Soon, he started sneaking off to try and hunt whenever his ma would lay down to nap, success didn't come easy, but when it did they were rewarded with full bellies of stoat and hare. As days drifted in and out, Kipper grew in to a young wolf, before he could really call himself a pup. He was his mothers sole protector and provider while she was in this delicate state. Pretty strong for a beta! Almost alpha like. That train
of thought struck something in him. Yes. Yes he'd like to be alpha very much. Once his mother had given birth, Kipper had made up his mind. He was alpha now and these were his pups! He would protect, provide, and be the alpha they needed, no matter how much his ma tried to push those thoughts out of his mind.
Ā Seasons past and his pups grew and grew, until their day had finally come. Kipper had done his best. They were loved, well cared for, and had good hunting and social skills. That had been the easier part. Giving them his blessing to leave whenever they wished and saying goodby as they left however, was the hardest thing he'd ever done. By the time his last pup left the nest, spring had once again returned to the tundra, bringing along the scents of new life with it. Fresh calves, fresh grass, fresh...fruit? Kipper took in the scent, sweet and thick and very familiar. He'd smelled this scent a long time ago, back when he was too young to understand. Kipper had a choice to make. He could leave his ma to defend herself from any random 'stud' roaming around here...or... he could stay with her and do something that wasn't easily accepted by many wolves. He sat and pondered for a few more seconds before his body made up his mind for him. Kipper got up and trotted off...right in the direction of their den. Why not have some fun, it wasn't like his ma would complain anyways. She had been actively encouraging his behavior for months now, no doubt finally accepting that he was an Alpha. Biology could go suck an egg! It didn't take long after her heat, for her belly to swell with pups once more. Kipper was ecstatic, more pups for him to protect and provide for! The more excited he became about his impending fatherhood, the more his ma seemed to relax and enjoy her pregnancy. Kipper wondered if she would want another litter after this one, maybe even another after that. They could fill this plain with pups if they wanted too and no one could tell them that they were wrong.
Ā Kipper laid in the mud on top of their burial site, his mother and pups burial site that is. He barely ever moved anymore. Why bother to eat and drink when your whole world was lifeless in a dirt hole? It was all his fault, she would have lived a lot longer if he just could have just used his brain and walked away from her that day. She could have rejected a random stud, could have tried to fight them if she didn't want their advances even, but her darling son who only ever cared for her? She couldn't resist him, that's why she allowed him to mate with her. It was convenience and guilt, not love and acceptance. He shouldn't have been so blind. Had he been able to see through his toxic 'alpha dad' mentality, he would have seen how hard it had been for her to deliver the first litter. He would have noticed how oddly shaped those pups had been, how hard the were to teach, and how much they struggled to do average wolf things. Being severely inbred, his own pups were much worse off, the first two already in death's embrace upon delivery and the third well on its way there. The fourth pup was the one that took his ma's life, it's body so twisted it was unable to pass from her, infecting her as its body began to break down. Kipper stayed with her long after she'd gone, frozen by the effects of his own actions. Now he lies on to of their resting place, unwilling to move, even for the howls of his stomach which he'd long since ignored.Ā
Eventually hunger and thirst got the better of him and once he started moving he didn't look back. Wandering as he had with his ma so long ago was a bittersweet experience. Helping some wounds close and keeping others freshly salted. All of his traveling eventually saw him in the deciduous forest, where the falling leaves and soft rushing of the creek led him to a well earned nap. Kipper snorted awake as a new scent hit his nose. Two wolves were in the area an alpha and an omega by the scent of them. They were young, very much still pups. The alpha stepped through the brush followed by the omega and a black furred, oddly scented wolf. The odd wolf, clearly much older than the pups, turned to the alpha and said, "Now that you've started your pack, let's try to befriend some wolves." And the rest was history.
